I think Hexy might be granting your Matt Read request to play a more offensive role. - ravishingone

I don't think Hartnell is a good fit and seems Hextall felt the same way. - jstross
Sounds like he was about to get his Golden Giroux Ticket revoked. |

Yup, I could read a little deeper and believe Vinny might stay because his contract is that immovable. Hartnell's contract was one step away from immovable, but could enter that category next summer. |

Apparently, the Flyers have been working on it for a few days, Hartnell didn't ask to be traded, but when he asked Hexy what his role would be, Hexy "hemmed and hawed" and Hartnell got upset.

Let's be honest. Hextall would've taken more in a trade to a team Hartnell would waive his no trade for. He took the best offer he could get. I can live with it. - jstross
If this was the best trade he could get, then no trade for you Hextall! No trade would have been better. Value was not realised here. The post before of a bloggers opinion was not my opinion directly bit an example of what everyone else can see from outside of our clouded perspective.
That all said- I have become less pissed about this. I have relocated the letting in of a goal from center ice in the playoffs as my worst Hexy moment again. I have stepped away from the ledge. |

I find it amusing how many people wanted to trade Hartnell so badly over the last year, and now that they pulled the trigger so many are acting like the sky is falling. I don't love getting Umberger back any more than alot of you, but the simple fact is if you put Umberger on a line with G and Voracek there's really no reason to believe that he couldn't put up 20 goals and similar stats to Hartnell. Scotty sure isn't the player who potted 35+ goals that one year with Jagr anymore (funny how it was in his contract year too). The deal helps you get out of 2 years of a bad contract, with a slightly less bad contract, plain and simple. The poster who keeps suggesting they could have gotten 1st or 2nd rounders for him...just not reality. Hexy may be a rookie GM, but i'm sure he did his due diligence before making this move. Just like with Vinny, if they wanted to move him they were going to have to take back another bad contract, nobody is going to overpay or just give up draft picks for players on the downside of 30, with no speed, and who make alot of money. I'd argue that Hartnell is just the bigger name at this point, but I really don't think his actual game is much better than Umberger and I really doubt he ages well over this contracts life. |

Forget a team that has won anything, has there even been an NHL team in the past 10 years without a 30+ player on it? - JAKEw1234
To explain further. Yes you need leadership and some players in their 30's can be big contributors. But usually they are on very short term deals and used as compliments to a young core. That's just how it is now. These 5 year deals for aging players that are expected to be major contributors doesn't fly. You've got to constantly getter younger and better at same time. Draft is the key to that. Got to hit stride at right time. IMO we don't have a shot until la, chi, start to get older in a few years anyways. |

#Flyers approached Hartnell with the trade. He didn’t ask to be traded. - Jsaquella
Well, there you go -- the GM wanted to make the ove, it appears.
I think if we can get bludgeoned repeatedly about how the Kings won the Cup and Hextall was a part of that, and he's the GM now, then seeing how it plays out is what has to happen |

I'm a little confused, Hartnell is coming off a 20 goal season with top line and first unit PP time has a lot left in the tank and is a needed commodity. However, Umberger coming off an 18 goal season not playing top line or first unit PP sucks balls.

I would rather the Flyers only get the 4th rounder and not be stuck with Umberger. If they wanted to give him away they shouldn't have taken back an awful contract in return. We trade a 1st line (decent first liner, great second liner) player for worse than nothing! |

What Tomahawk said -- they weren't looking to guarantee Hartnell first line or top PP anymore and might just have been planning to move him down |

Sure. What if other teams said, "We'll make a deal, but there's no (frank)ing way we're trading for that contract unless you take money back"? |

I don't want that $4.75 in the last two years of the contract and if he's not traded now he may never have been. As long as a trade helps the future I'm OK with it. |
