You've caught on to that huh?

- MJL

That would be the case if no RJ contract came back! This is not the best they could do to win latter. Sorry, I'm out I need to stop reading this.

Just got back from work.

Whats the vibe boys?

Seems like they traded him to just clear salary getting very little in return.

Don't a fan really. I wanted Hartnell off, or would have been okay with him off of the team, but for so little...

I hate this deal. I don't hate Hartnell or Umberger. I think they are good players, but Hartnell is worth a lot more than Umberger. Not just a 4th round pick in a crappy draft year better. This was a fleecing, even if RJ turns out to be a better player for us than Hartnell, we got robbed because Hartnell's stock is way higher than RJ's right now. I find it difficult to believe that there were not better options or deals out there to move Hartsy. A 20-30 goal scoring power forward that plays with a phyiscal edge, misses very few games and has proven durability. For an overpaid role player who was probably on the cusp of being bought out? If Hexy wanted Umberger, we only had to wait for the inevitable buyout and then sign him for nothing. Forget the 4th round pick, get Columbus to take half or RJ's salary and I call that deal a win. Hartsy for RJ at 2.3mil for 3 years? WIN. Or how about give us the rights to Nikita Niktin along with the pick? Columbus isn't signing him, we'll take that deal. The issue to me is not what we got, it is I believe we could have gotten way more. I feel like we sold ourselves short and got pwned.

Regardless of how this shakes out, I feel we left money on the table...

Nikitin's rights have already been dealt.

seems like the Flyers were listening when word in here was that Schenn had a better one timer than Hartnell.

Just weird.

Don't like it to be honest. I am the first to criticize Hartnell, he can be wildly inconsistent even in the most basic parts of his game, and is pretty bad with the discipline.

However to give him away for nothing and take back a bad contract?

Not sure what the reasoning was here. Management, management.

You know what does happen sometimes with players in their early 30's. They have a few bad years due to a variety of reasons, and then they bounce back. And find their game again. Not saying that is a definite here, but let's not jump the gun with the Umberger sucks talk.
- MJL

I agree. Remember when Hartnell scored 11 points in 32 games? He bounced back the next season.

Emotions were getting the best of me when I said Umberger sucks, but he is a much bigger risk/concern than Hartnell is or was coming out of last season.

I think he is an alright secondary player. The inconsistency wouldn't make me want to rely on him as a core piece.

The fourth rounder is pretty lame, but to take back that Umberger contract? I liked RJ back in his time with the Flyers but from what I have seen of him lately he's pretty bad.

I am, and have for a while now been for getting rid of Hartnell in the right deal. Even if its him for a pick, or prospect. This is basically trading him for nothing and a bad contract in return.

I understand that but how does this trade make them more flexible to create a better product by opening night? This is such a head scratcher to me.
- coffee junkie

There's lot's of areas that flexible can be applied to. Flexible with salary and the Cap. Flexible on the ice. I'm sure Hextall has a plan. Have to see it play out.

Think maybe Baby Schenn wanted assurance of his role on the team moving forward before signing an extension?

Hartnell played the first line, partly, because he didn't do much when used elsewhere.
- Jsaquella

Also, was anyone else better as our first line LW? Read could be I guess, but really, how bad was Coots offensively without Read? Plus Read & G are pretty tiny for a first line. Let's face it, Hartnell was our best LW, and would be the top LW power forward on many teams in the NHL. I'm not saying that he's a flawless player, but on paper, he's worth a heck of a lot more than what we got for him.

It's not the end of the world, (especially with Schenn signing) but this trade is just not a good one unless RJ goes on to score 30+ goals and has some kind of a monster year for us... but even then I'll be thinking we could have had him at half his salary or had Nikitin signed or something. It's just a bad trade.

I suppose even though Schenn was just re-signed, he could still be dealt. It's happened before. But I find that unlikely.

So Flyers are either hoping Schenn fits into LW role with G and Jake OR they will do what they can to trade Vinny. There's no way they stick with the Vinny/Schenn/Simmonds experiment or the fourth line Vinny experiment

Comparing the Corsi of a guy who played most of the season with Giroux and Voracek with the Corsi of a guy who was on the BJ's checking line is terrible analysis.

Maybe Hextall thinks Hartnell's current style of play does not translate well to winning in the playoffs. Lack of discipline, bad and sloppy play, easily frustrated...etc. The risk of keeping Hartnell and hoping he turns it around is probably higher than being rid of him and his terrible contract.

I love the guy as a person, but I wanted to strangle him during the Rangers series.

I really just wish he could have been a little more patient with trying to move Hartnell's contract, even if it meant we might have to play him next year. This trade should not have been the first move made in the off season. If it got late in the off season and had to be done I would be a lot more OK with this.

Who got a long enough shot? Raffl?

Also, now that they added Umberger, who did score 18 goals as a 3rd liner, they have a viable option to replace Read
