Hartnell: I waived no-move after Hexy "hummed and hawed" about his role on Flyers. "I was upset, a little angry."

Dave Isaac ‏@davegisaac 2m

#Flyers approached Hartnell with the trade. He didn’t ask to be traded.

Its a business I get that. However this practice of signing guys to be your core to long term deals, and dealing them shortly after is getting old.

Not isolated to Scott in any way, but it needs to end.

Fine, then why are we trading a first line LW for a checking line player making the same money... oh yeah and there is a huge numbers disparity...

Comparing the numbers of guys who play with different levels of players might be terrible, but so is ignoring the fact that they have to earn those line positions. And then recognizing that they are paid the same.

- flyler

If you're going to look at what both players are paid, and their cap hits. Then you have to consider what the situation was when they signed the deal.

this trade perplexes me a bit, unless it is the first of multiple moves.

Totally agree!

Hartnell getting traded didn't surprise me, for another forward, (and not a D man), does.

Nikitin's rights have already been dealt.
- MJL

No, they are letting the Oilers talk to him. His rights are still owned by Columbus.

Now Dan Boyles rights have actually been dealt. That's why he's technically an Islander.

Just weird.

Don't like it to be honest. I am the first to criticize Hartnell, he can be wildly inconsistent even in the most basic parts of his game, and is pretty bad with the discipline.

However to give him away for nothing and take back a bad contract?

Not sure what the reasoning was here. Management, management.

- flyer_nutter

They didn't give him away for nothing. And a bad contract is relative.

Maybe Hextall thinks Hartnell's current style of play does not translate well to winning in the playoffs. Lack of discipline, bad and sloppy play, easily frustrated...etc. The risk of keeping Hartnell and hoping he turns it around is probably higher than being rid of him and his terrible contract.

I love the guy as a person, but I wanted to strangle him during the Rangers series.

I am not a huge fan. Havent been for a while for the reasons you listed. He seemed to be moving the last few years away from the basic things that made him effective. Either way, he was a pretty proven first line winger who could strongly help your team.

If they wanted to trade him, I am cool with that. However to get basically nothing back except a 4th rounder and bad contract? Very meh.

Hartnell says Hextall implied “he was done” in Philly. Was initially angry about the trade, ultimately decided waiving NTC was smart.

True true. I just don't like it personally. The Gagne fiasco, trading Carter/Richards/JVR after long term deals. Now Hartnell.

Not that all of those moves were bad, but (frank). Better identity your core if you want to commit such contracts to it.

Looking at this trade logically it's not as one sided as I thought.
Umberger only scored 2 fewer goals than Hartnell last year in 4 fewer games played. Not to mention Hartnell played with Giroux most of the year, and saw first unit PP time. Umberger is better defensively, and is much more disciplined. His contract isn't great, and the injuries are a concern, but I think this trade is almost equal value considering Hartnell has 2 more years on his deal.

Not a great trade, but I see the reasoning for it.

A little curious for all those that say the team isn't re-building.

If I am MacDonald, Streit or Vinny I don't feel super comfortable right now.

Just get a (frank)ing plan and stick to it. All I ask. I can take a few years of a poop team, but stick to some kind of plan.

Brayden Schenn's new two year deal with PHI pays him $2.25M and $2.75M for an AAV of $2.5M.
