Umberger has a cap hit of 4.6.
Hartnell for 4.75
Hartnell has 5 years left and I believe Umberger has 3?
So essentially the same cap hit, for 2 years less of a worse player.
I am not a fan of Hartnell to the extreme I have often been the first to call him out for being inconsistent in the most basic parts of his game. I think he and his contract have faults.
However Umberger... Blah
Columbus GM to me took on a couple more years to get the better player. Again, I'd be cool with it but don't like taking Umberger back. - flyer_nutter
It essentially gives them one if not two free agencys to target a big player to be a better fit for the team. I'm perfectly fine with that. It was pretty clear there isnt much use for Hartnell in Berube's system. |

It is funny. But the main vibe on this thread has always been negative towards the Flyers and how they run the team. I'm curious as to how long it's going to take for Hextall to be turned on? - MJL
I still am okay with Holmgren, so I'll probably never sour on Hextall. |

Now you move Couturier to lw with Giroux and Voracek. Couter and Roos still kill penalties. RJ can now anchor the #3 center shutdown spot. Couter is too good to have his offensive side saddled as a shutdown center. If you do not give him that opportunity soon he will think he is a shutdown center and not grow into an expanded role. Now is the time, hopefully that is what Hextall is thinking. |

I'm sure they'll tread water for a bit until they know what they're doing with VL. But the draft is around the corner, maybe theyll make a splash |

I suppose. I was kind of surprised when Holmgren gave him that deal to begin with, it was risky as hell. Especially for a guy who has always had chronic discipline issues.
Although I thought the cap was never a problem with the Flyers. Couldn't resist. |

Vanek with Giroux and Voracek would be lights out! Not likely though.

Move one of the best defensive centers in the league to wing. I like how you think. |

No way they will move Couturier to Wing. He is a Center and needs to stay at Center. He needs to be given more favorable starts and better matchups. But he's a center.

Have to look at the pros and cons of the deal. If the trade is looked at strictly in terms of the trade, I think that Columbus got the better player. But the League has changed with the Cap, and the effect it has. Cap space now or in the future, is as asset for a team. The Flyers gained a few less years in term. That's on the Flyers side of the ledger. They also got a better skater, and defensive player. And also gained versatility. As well as gaining some discipline and got a player that will take less penalties. They probably gave up some goals, and some toughness. All the talk was about the Flyers becoming a better 5 on 5 team. Does this move help accomplish that? We have to see. |

A small added bonus is it's a lot easier to buyout Umberger do to the term. |

MJL, better trade him then rather than have that kind of a talent on the third line behind Giroux and Schenn. Couter could easily adapt to the wing and still take a shift on the penalty kill with G. Couter need to develop his offensive game at this stage of his career, it will not happen on the third line. Umberger at 3C makes more sense than Umberger on line 1 or 2 at lw. Think out of the box once in awhile and it will do you good. If he remains at center he must at least get the #2C.
