hartnell 52 points playing with giroux
umberger 34 points playing with a bunch of no namers - 2Real
Well, except for Ryan Johansen, the 33 goal scorer who looks like he'll be a stud for the next decade |

That's fair.
At face value, Hartnell.
But the reality is your question is silly. This trade wasn't made strictly because of RJ being "better" than Hartnell. There are plenty of underlying factors, most of which have been talked about today, including the salary part of it, RJ being a player who would fit in Roob's system better (don't forget the possibility of Hartnell not liking his role on the team for the next few years, but that's just a swirling rumor), RJ's defensive ability and wheels are superior to Hartsy's, and the fact that Hartnell is putting up rather mediocre numbers despite playing next to Jake and G AND playing on the first powerplay unit.
You can't just look at a trade and condone the rationale behind it. - Giroux_Is_God
Now I answer you as promised. We trade Lecavalier just for the dump, no silly picking apart of such a silly deal. Plus we keep our front line player who's still good right now. |

I think Coburn is at very little risk - JAKEw1234
In theory, I would agree. Kimmo is the safest because of his deal and I'm sure he got assurances from the Flyers he's sticking around for the year unless the team totally implodes.

Stop, I'm not condoning let's make a move to make a move theory. As it stands right now, the returning top 6 d-men are all back right now. If the general consensus, it wasn't the right mix at the end of game 7 against the Rangers, that perception hasn't changed now.
It's simple, the only guy right now who is guaranteed a spot in the top 6 opening night is Kimmo. I don't think that can be disputed. - ravishingone
What the fans perception is, doesn't matter. I'll explain further. In my opinion the Flyers value Grossmann, and what he brings to the team. I think they understand that having too many finesse defenseman that lack the physical edge of a player like Grossmann, is just as bad as lacking mobility and puck movement skill on the back end. So why trade one weakness for another? Which is why I stated the next defenseman they add needs to have both factors in his skill set. But that's a hard player to acquire. Which is why I stated don't make a move just to make a move. If you think I assumed that you were thinking that, or that I place those words in your mouth, you're mistaken. Not my intention.
They need to be patient and make the right move. No player is ever guaranteed anything. But I think that odds are, the current top 6 will start the Season. But you never know.

So.....you're using the Vinny salary dump method for cap relief 3 years down the line in response to the situation I presented in my little question?
That's cheating. You're supposed to not look at all that stuff, remember? It's one or the other. Would you rather have cap room or no cap room with regards to Hartnell's contract.
See? It's silly.

Think with Coots they just have to buy out one year of Umberger as opposed to staring at three more for Hartnell
