Traded five years of a bad contract for three years of a bad contract

except that one is a good hockey player, and one can barely skate.

hartnell had MUCH MORE value than simply a player who was gonna be bought out anyways.

jesus man, get a 7th rd pick for him....still better than taking umburger back.

CBJ wins this trade, and it's not even close.

Hey Ek, FYI, Benning has asked Kelser to expand his NTC to include St. Louis. St. Louis has put forth a very good offer.

Just thought you should know.

Why would Boston want a over the hill Boyle. he probably wants 2 years at 3 million a year ...pass keep Boychuk instead.

im now in the rumor game...sources tell me that 29 teams have interest in Bergeron if Boston wants to move him....you heard it here first

Just curious why are people saying Hartnell will be a LA King next year? Did he say that's where he wanted to be or something?

markov, 3 years at 5.75. that's a lot for someone of his age with his injury history

You high? Hartnell is the better player now. That is true but in 2 years will he still be the same at 34? He is signed until he is 38 and as a Power forward they tend to decline early. Hartnell was NOT a buyout option. Philly used both CBO and would not use a regular buyout on him and gives us more cap issues.

Umberger has similar numbers, slightly less but lets face it. Umberger didn't play with Giroux, Hartnell did. It is close and short term it isn't that good but Long term, we free up that 4.6 in 2 years rather than 6

i think it's just a joke, based on when they moved carter and richards (both were in LA within that same season)

It's a joke because Carter banged Hartnell's wife when they were in Philly and that lead to Philly trading him to CBJ

I agree... even if Hartnell wanted out, you could have done better.

Even for a 3rd round pick... at least you would have opened up some cap space.

Strange trade!!!

There would have always been a bottom feeding team struggling to get to cap floor that would have took Hartnell of your hands when his hit was higher than his salary.

Its a flat out horrible move for the flyers, and not a good start to the Hextall era.

come on man, i know you're trying to see the silver lining here........and maybe in 3 years it'll work out..........but for RIGHT NOW and the next 3 years, CBJ absolutely bent philly over in this trade.

oh, and hartnell and umberger are the same age. hartnell had like 20 more pts than r.j. this past season, and is only 2 years removed from almost scoring 40. in terms of advanced stats, it's so lopsided it's almost comical.

so, like you said, in 3 years this might look good..........but right now, it's an absolute steal for columbus.

and you need to get the contracts straight too.......i know you're trying to exaggerate to maybe feel better about the deal. r.j. signed for 3 more, hartnell for 5 more....not 2 and 6 like you suggested.

You mean the history of him missing one game the last two seasons? Concidering him being the best UFA D-man available we didnt have much choice but to give him market value because thats what it is. 40-50-point Dman with great hockeysence for 5.75M isnt really a bad deal. That 30-point winger who played for NJ who signed with the leafs... THAT is a bad deal.

i think he's worth the same as guys like karlsson and pietrangelo....which is 6.5.

habs (frank)ed up by giving him that bridge deal, and now they're gonna pay for it. they probably could have had him at 5-6 years for 6 mil per.

You sure? Markov made that in his last contract, I didn't read anything that had the number released yet.

won't argue with that.
not sure he's the best UFA D available though. i'd say niskanen is better, and boyle is about the same.

i think 5.75 is the max he would have gotten in the open market, would have thought the habs would have been able to lock him up for 5.

i guess it's not much at the end of the day though, but given some of the players the habs have to re-sign, i think every penny is gonna be needed.
