Because he's property of another team. So then we are trading assets for someone who's role could be filled by numerous players.
We IMO shouldn't be looking for 3rd liners unless they are vets that are signed for a year or 2 to help get to the floor.
In 2-3 years guys like Larsson, Compher, Fasching, Catenacci, other Foligno, and players XY and Z will be fine on the 3rd line - sbroads24
I suppose if the price was right I'd go after it. I mean we have Deslauriers, Larsson and Foligno who look to be great checking forwards. Compher likely projects to the 2nd or 3rd line so that oughta be nice. I didn't think Fasching projected as a bottom six though. Anyway, your point is made. This team needs a leader or three though, no denying that. |

Well yea, but if you're told "we'd like to move in a different direction." What would you say? No, (frank) off? It's a tough situation to be in I'd guess. It's like your boss asking you to resign. - TheSabresTaco
He still could've said well that's nice I'll only accept to be move to team x, y, and z.
He had to ok the move to Columbus. |

Then why has he never averaged more than 12 seconds per game in any season of his career?

Almost like a $3 mill version of Jochen Hecht, N.Foligno's a guy who u can toss out there in any situation.
I mean yeah, as long as the value is there... Why not? Put Kaleta with dem Foligno boys and you're getting a lotta guts for your dollar on that 3rd line. - SuperCat
He's never been asked to play the pk with any team he's been on.
How do you know he can? |

Cheaper than those guys, younger (than Stewart by 1 day), & can play the PK.
He's had a taste of what Murray expects, and could be a nice fit for Nolan.
Let's not forget as well, that there's a good chance that Stafford & Stewart are both traded by the deadline.
Can't just assume these UFAs-to-be are gonna want to stick around. - SuperCat
So you'd trade assets for another one? |

Well of course. All I'm saying is that it didn't seem like Hartnell asked to be traded. |

On top of that, who the hell is going to play when Stewart and Stafford are both traded next season. We have no one. Nothing.
Hodgson. Ennis. Girgensons. Pile of third and fourth liners. Neato frickin potato. |

If you must, then yes.
You certainly don't let talent walk away for nothing when the object here is to stock the cupboards.
Worse case, you get picks for rental players. |

In 466 gp he has just under 43 minutes of SH TOI in his CAREER.
Now all of a sudden he's some magical pk guru. |

The guy is a rugged two-way forward who isn't afraid to lay his body on the line. I'm willing to give him a shot.
He's a young player looking for an opportunity.

He was unhappy with the coach and IMO was going to be seeing less ice time to the youngins.
The writing was on the wall for him weather he asked to be or not. |

If you opt out you should be barred from resigning with same team. Either you want their money or you don't. And don't give me this betterment for the team bullsh!t. He's opting out to make MORE guaranteed money from the same team. - dadeadhead
It's not bullpoop, he was owed close to 43 million had he opted to stay with the current contract.
He can make money anywhere, by restructuring the contract he can let Miami sign someone to help replace the production they lost/will lose as wade and allen age. |

But how high could the price really get on a 3rd line utility player like that really get?
Certainly not a 1st rd pick.
Two 2nd rd picks perhaps? I'd still make that trade. Mainly because you'd be getting a young Top 9 forward that you knew (100%), you are gonna build around for the long haul. - SuperCat
For one I think 2 2nds for Nick is too high. We went to great lengths to stockpile these picks and they shouldn't be given away frivolously. Nick is a good player who most likely wont play in an All-Star game in his career. |

You do know Colorado has 18 players signed for next year and 23 mil in cap space right? - dadeadhead
So McKinnon is always gonna make less than 1 million a year and statsny isn't gonna ask for a raise!?!? Facts have no place here! Deal is dumb. Why on earth would Colorado want phaneuf at a cap hit of 6.5 a year for the next 6 years. |

He was due 20.6 mil next season.
If he resigns it will be for a 5 yr max contract that will pay him on avg more than the 20.6. |

Toronto is trying to distance themselves from phaneuf and his contract. Somebody should save them just like how Philly did with Luke schenn for jvr deal |

Nothing about the Tim Murray/Marcus Foligno connections tickles your fancy?
I'm just sayin, if there's a particular guy who is a good fit here. Identify him & make it happen. Chemistry is important.
Lets get this re-build right, brick by painstaking brick. |

They have plenty of space to sign ROR, Stastny, and trade for Phaneuf if they wanted to. If they feel they are a Phaneuf away from really challenging for the cup, they have the space to do it over the next few years.
They are far from having cap issues. Hell in 2 years they have 50 mil in space. |
