31 pts doesn't exactly scream top producing point man, and you'd like to see more consistency out of a guy who's getting paid as much as he is.

Bah, you got me after I closed the window. It still puts him top 50 I think in the NHL, so that's pretty high up there.

I was looking back through the last 5 years I think and he's been up there decently in points.

It was more of a general opinion though on the 1/2 pairing.

Phaneuf not even a top 30 scoring dman.

Not many legit #1 defenders in the league. Phaneufs is a 2nd pairing dman that is great on the pp.

I would take Phaneuf and pair him with Myers any day.

But that's the main appeal with him. He will occasionally land a big hit, score a ppg and have a scrap once or twice a year. Have to overlook how horrible he is on the back end.

He also had a down year when it comes to scoring. He had 3 less points last year in a lockout shortened season. He tends to hover around .45 or .50 ppg. Not bad for a defenseman, IMO.

I'm not a huge fan of Phaneuf, but I think you're selling him a bit short. While he does have games like you described above, he also has games where he's very good. My issue with his game is that it can be wildly inconsistent. But he's made strides with that as well.

That's a huge asset to give up for ol' Vinny. I feel like he can be MUCH better utilized.
