The 2nd line Center market isnt as deep as we thought it would be. And that helps Vinny's value. Richards and Jumbo Joe haven't been bought out. Nucks and Sends are looking for big hauls for Kesler and Spezza. That leaves Statsny and Brad Richards as your UFA targets. Someone is going to offer better than that for Vinny.
- hereticpride

I concur...Vinny may be a deal after Stats and B RIchards sign.... Some team is going to be left without a 2nd line center when the music stops and Vinny would be a nice cheap alternative...Nashville is my guess

His trade value should be higher a little over a year from now when there's only three years and $8.5 million left on his deal.

Any trade where the Flyers are retaining more than $500K for the next four seasons sounds bad to me.

unless he is injured again and has another bad year.

Yeah, unlike Streit/AMac, he could actually step in and be that #1 all-situations dman they've been lacking. It's funny how he's still pegged as a one-way guy, after all these years of being great all-around.
- Tomahawk

He's not great all around. He's very good offensively and with the puck. And he is a decent defender. He's not the #1 all situations player that compares even close to the top #1 all situaitons defenseman. He's not even in the all around class that an emerging defenseman such as McDonagh is. He would be an upgrade on Streit, but with the price of MacDonald and the Cap implications. It would not be worth it.

I think there's better options. There are worse things than having a 20-25 goal scorer in your lineup. After all, everyone liked Briere all those years.
- jmatchett383

I hope there are better options, if not, you gotta know when to hold em and know when to fold em. Keep him and hope his injury issues are over. And reassess next summer.

I'd rather not bank on him being injured.
- jmatchett383

I'm not banking on it, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if it happens that way.
And now, you have a guy on the roster that the organization has basically said "you don't fit our direction and we don't really have a use for you now".

I agree. Campbell just doesn't fit unless it is Streit going out. We talk about the mix. Brining in campbell with streit wouldn't be good. same as we talk about having too many thrumpers like grossmann and schenn. Guys like Kimmo and MacDonald i consider all-round d as they are not just stay at home guys but are mobile puck movers. But its not like the bring soo much offense they are offensive dmen either.
- J35Bacher

How would replacing MacDonald with Campbell make the "mix" worse?

Campbell-Coburn
Streit-Grossmann
Kimmo-Schenn

Kimmo is too old and MacDonald is not good enough defensively to handle first pairing duties with Coburn.

Funny how quickly your tune changed on that regard... because when we acquired a 35 year old Mark Streit it wasnt... idk.. nightmarish.

Guess it depends on the player..

- jak521

Yeah, but we didn't give up assets to acquire Striet, and his cap hit isn't 7.1 million a year.

It's also possible that Giroux gets hit by a bus tomorrow.

If the vinny deal goes down. I would expect the flyers might trade down in the first round, possibly recouping a late 2nd rounder.

Your sending out a 27 year old all around dmen for a 35+ strictly offensive dman with a 7mil cap hit. How does it make you better? Long term this deal isn't good? Also Macdonld plays pecial teams so he can take minutes off Kimmo and Coburn so they aren't out ll the time. He can play PK and some PP. Campbell won't play PK so your putting more hard minutes on your top dmen

i'm curious as to why so many people are saying Sonny Milano is undersized. from what i've read, he's a wiz with the puck and can put it away with skill. sure, that sounds like two undersized effective flyers we've seen score goals over the past 5 years or so (Briere and Giroux)...but he's listed as taller (edit, AND heavier) than both. this isn't 2002, is 6'0 183 at 19 years old "undersized" still?

of course.

but the % chance of that happening compared to the data showing that older payers are more injury prone and less productive are a little different.

If Vinny had a little more of the power skating you used to see, I don't think they move him and chalk last year up as a fluke.
