If you're going to the draft tonight, Gary Bettman said at breakfast this morning that "It won't hurt my feelings if you don't boo me tonight." I hate to admit that in person he was charming, funny, and self-effacing.

I get that. I guess I am just not as high on campbells defensive game as some. to each their own
- J35Bacher

He's not going to shut anybody down, but neither is AMac, so it's a wash.

Offensively, contract term, special teams, matchups... everything else besides age swings heavily in his favor.

Once his contract is up, we'd already have been transitioning over to the kids.

I only responded to the one post, man. I don't even know what you said; posts are coming fast and furious

Yeah, I just looked and hereticpride misquoted me. I don't think most people would do that package for those 2.

How would replacing MacDonald with Campbell make the "mix" worse?

Campbell-Coburn
Streit-Grossmann
Kimmo-Schenn

Kimmo is too old and MacDonald is not good enough defensively to handle first pairing duties with Coburn.

- Feanor

I don't see Campbell as a significant enough upgrade over MacDonald defensively to make that deal. Also adding a 35 year old defenseman and removing a 28 year old defenseman, to a mix that already includes a 35 year old and 39 year old defenseman.

And how do we know that these prospects will be ready? I like that we would have MacDonald, a player who has proven can play in the nhl, still there. I know the pros and cons. But if your wrong about the propects being ready then your going to need to sign someone and we have seen how the market works for FA dmen. Where as MacDonald would already be on a reasonable deal. I thought everyone wanted us to stop throwing huge money and long term deals at FA dmen?

Campbell kills penalties and he faces tough competition and excels.. he's better than AMac across the board.
- Tomahawk

If Campbell is the player you say he is. Which is an all situations#1 all around defensman that the Flyers are looking for. And he faces tough competition and excels, and is better across the board the MacDonald is. Why in hell would Florida make that deal?

the deal ek has for scottie upshall is so horrendous that it would seriously make me question who is running things afterall, cuz that sounds like a homer move.

FWIW, Florida was dead last in PK% last year. So I'm not sure if he kills penalties well or is just the best of the worst.
- jmatchett383

Every defenseman can be used on the PK. Being good at it is another story.

So the problem is that you have no idea about Campbell's game. He is better defensively than MacDonald and he does kill penalties.
- Feanor

He is used on the PK, but he does not lead the team is ice time per game on the PK. And saying he's better defensively then MacDonald is a matter of opinion. I disagree. So couldn't I also claim that the problem is that you have no idea about campbell's game?

Holmgren wouldn't do that deal. He's probably still shaking his head over the Hartnell deal. If nothing else Holmgren may have been loyal to a fault with his players and personnel who did the right things.

Their goalies only being able to stop 85% of shots SH might have something to do w that.
- Tomahawk

And the play of the players in front of the goaltenders doesn't have anything to do with that SH SV%?

Do you feel MacDonald is underrated because he doesn't do anything great but does things good?

Just because he kills penalties on a terrible team doesn't mean he is a good PK guy.
They are a team with 2 experienced D men, one of whom stopped be jovocop years ago and then they have a guy in kulikov that will be good and get better going forward. everyone else is wet behind the ears, so Campbell MUST play in all situations for them.

Ah, there it is, context. Well done.

On the surface, yes, but Upshall's contract expires after next season. And, for all his injuries and inconsistency that have plagued him through his career, he certainly has great speed. He also has an upbeat, enthusiastic sort of personality and that it something the team can use behind-the-scenes with Hartnell going.

But as a hockey trade and use of assets in the short run, it would be a bitter pill to swallow.

I think there's better options. There are worse things than having a 20-25 goal scorer in your lineup. After all, everyone liked Briere all those years.
- jmatchett383

I hope there are better options, if not, you gotta know when to hold em and know when to fold em. Keep him and hope his injury issues are over. And reassess next summer.
