Lots of big names going off the board quickly - PhillySportsGuy
Funny how slowly the first round goes for TV coverage and drama
The GM's all have hangovers and want to get out of there and recover/prep for free agency day.

When's the last time a trade didn't happen in an entire draft that included a player in the trade for an upcoming pick? |

Wish we would have moved up.
It's a shame the Flyers waited so long to draft dmen. By the time our prospects hit their primes, Giroux and the Core will be in their 30's or near their 30's. - archion113
It will be irony that if our young D men pan out we will need to start drafting offensive minded players..... |

The First Round is way too slow. I like listening to some of the picks but really these kids suck at interviews and it's more awkward than anything else. Most of them look depressed to be picked by a poop team. |

I would say he's one of the best available at this point. |

Might as well! Would rather have too much D than too little D. |

I'm really surprised the cap ceiling was set at 69M for 2014-2015....
It was projected to be between 71M-75M. Flyers are at the moment 236K over.
We will have 4.9M cap space with Pronger going on LTIR, but we still need to account for Laughton 800k, Bellmare 600k, Akeson rfa and a backup goalie if all make the big club.
That would leave us with little space... Maybe between 1M-1.5M I would think.
Moving Vinny and Streit or Grossman would give us some breathing room.
Personally, I would be interested in a few players on the ufa/rfa market: Mason Raymond UFA, Pouliot UFA, Del Zotto RFA, Niskanen UFA (too expensive).

I think the GM's wanted to make sure the cap didn't get out of control as fast as it was. That way they don't have to pay a higher $ max for contracts etc.
Lame that some teams signed RFA's and upcoming UFA's assuming a 71m cap, and than it goes to 69m. |

I agree. However I do believe its important that the Phantoms remain a well balanced team. Having our D men down there pinned in their own zone more often than not could really start to mess with guys development, D men and Goalies included. - hereticpride
I think this is a really important point that was kinda skipped over.
If you think back to the last Calder Cup Phantoms team, they had Carter, Richards, Sharp, Seidenberg, Niitti, Umberger and a whole bunch of supporting cast members that played in the NHL, some for a while. They learned to win together.
The current team is doing nothing but learning how to lose. If you listened to Sanheim, he said the biggest difference in his game was confidence. Well, nothing kills confidence like constant losing.
Personally, I put Laughton in the minors next year as 1st line center for a couple of reasons, and I put him with Akeson and maybe Straka. You have to see if he can bring any offense.
But it also makes the team over all more competitive, and that will be better for Cousins, Ghost, Alt, Haag and the others. |
