How can you go downhill when you're at the bottom?
I mean, making the playoffs once in 10 years and now you're going downhill?
Wow! - fidopro

Can't they just loan him to the London Knights or any other OHL team that has a good reputation for that matter? - JohnFergusonJr
Only if he gets drafted by them in the CHL Import Draft and then agrees to it. That would mean he's stuck in the CHL for two seasons unless he makes the NHL. |

I would think going from a men's league in Sweden to playing in a U20 league in the CHL might be a little detrimental to his progress. What's he going to learn if he's lighting up a league of 16/17 year olds? |

A more North American game, but ya, he'd be stuck in for 2 years, could have a Grigorenko or Niederreiter situation where he's too good for that level, but not good enough for the NHL in a years time. |

My hope.
Gives us something to cheer for at the WJC next year if Canada's recent trend continues. |

They had a good young team devoid of albatross contracts and useless tits, where now they do... They made progress each year until making the dance, usually teams progress further at that point of the window opening, instead they made poor choices and regressed... Go troll in your own teams thread... |

Well, that's what Kadri needed plus time in the AHL and that's what it looks like this kid needs too regardless of how talented he thinks he is. |

Nonis on Polak
"If you look at the minutes he plays he often plays against team's top players. He is very physical, he's very strong. I think there's a perception that because he's so big he's not mobile, I don't think that's true at all. We think that one of his strengths is his skating ability. "

Maybe more significant is how the trade promises to open up further opportunity for the club's two top guns on defence: Morgan Rielly and Jake Gardiner. By removing Gunnarsson – who teamed with Dion Phaneuf on left side of the top pair – and adding the right-handed Polak, the Leafs opened up room for Rielly and Gardiner to become more prominent members of the defence.
Rielly should move from a place on the bottom pair to something more substantial in the top-four. Gardiner, who led the team in even-strength ice-time, might be the one to replace Gunnarsson on the top pair
Left-handed shots, Rielly and Gardiner were both forced to play the right side often last season – nearly the entire season for the rookie – due to the rarity of right-handed defenders on the Toronto defence (Gardiner, specifically, struggled with the change and eventually had to move back to the left).
I didnt know the kid wasnt playing his side he should be... - poohcrumbs
Do I sense a little warmth in your heart for them now? |

The winger is in a unique position: He’s a free agent in Europe. If he doesn’t make the Leafs out of training camp, t hey can elect to send him to the AHL, something they couldn’t do with a Canadian player, or back to Sweden if a team will take him, or to an OHL team.
“That is up to the team,” said Nylander. “My goal is to play in the NHL. If not, go back to Sweden or the AHL.”

He can play on the Marlies or the ECHL affiliate at 18 because he's coming from Europe, the USHL also works that way. Only the CHL stops players from leaving until they are 20 or have fulfilled the 4 year agreement. |
