I wouldn't count the Blues out if they sign Stastny. I think they will still be interested, especially since his salary is so much lower than his cap hit.
It wouldn't surprise me at all if the Blues really wanted both Stastny & Spezza. Especially since they are going to need to rely more on offense with a young goalie in net. (Allen) - carcus The problem with this is they arent willing to give what we need to move him now and would be less likely to do so after they signed statsny. We arent moving him for nothing iam sure BM has told spezza this

Really? Tampa didn't do it this year with St. Louis? San Jose hasn't with Joe Thornton? This isn't a new occurrence. Please take your head out of your ass or just stop talking. - SeNsFaN0903
Just because other GMs have also made the same mistake doesn't mean it isn't a mistake.

I agree.
I think it's dumb, classless, and not especially helpful even on the PR front (which it is clearly a strategy for) |

Not to add to that neither GM made an announcement on a deal that they couldn't make. You don't Doig Wilson walking around telling everyone he has a trade for Thornton to Winnipeg but joe won't go. |

How can you classify it as a mistake? Player requests trade and the GM, in this market, with all the negative PR WRT to the finances, can't milk the market by showing the other involved GM's what will not get you player X. Spezza's agent agreed to the terms of Murray talking to teams on Spezza's list. GM received an offer and Spezza declined. It is what it is. |

Sure, I understand that.
But the Blues might be more interested in picking Spezza up if they also have Stastny. They might be willing to give up more if they just got another center with the only cost being $$$. I believe that moving Backes back to wing would be very beneficial to his offensive numbers, and that would be possible if we got both Spezza and Stastny. And that would make a bigger return for Spezza more manageable for the Blues.
I don't know if it really is realistic to think the Blues could be going after both players, but I can see the reasoning behind it and it would make sense for the Blues to give up a little more to get him in this scenario. |

How is Steve Yzerman grinding St. Louis in a press conference saying his hands were tied and it was the only move he could make different from Murray saying that he had an offer from Nash and Spezza didn't want to go? And FYI, San Jose GM has stated the negative effect on radio about Joe Thornton not wanting to waive. |

Does tbay unloading salary make you a bit less confident in getting Stastny. There are a few teams out there really need some big contracts to get to the cap floor |

It is a mistake to go out and publicly talk about a situation like this when you don't have to. There is no reason for it, other than attempting to put more pressure on Spezza accepting a deal to a team that is on his no trade list. (and it looks like they tried that, and Spezza didn't cave)
It is a mistake. He likely brought down the value of Spezza. Teams are going to low-ball their offers as they know, along with everyone else, that there is more pressure to trade him. It is one thing to talk to other teams about possibility trading a big time player. And it is another for them to know that you have to do something and the sooner the better as it is public that the sooner the better.
IMO, the GM going public like he has only brings down the possible return. That is a mistake. |

We should make a blog about the trades Murray made with teams that players had no trades to - Heatley and Edmonton, Redden and San Jose, Spezza and Nashville, Nash to Ottawa - the guy s great at making trades that are completely pointless. - tuna99

i don't think it's a mistake at all. with the amount of access the MSM has, 'unnamed sources", and social media, everything always gets out.
atleast doing it this way, all the cards are on the table, there's no speculation (or not as much).
in situations like this, can't really say there's a right or wrong way......had murray not said anything, and it managed to get out anyways, people would be ripping him for not being honest. |

Its funny how people are ignoring the actual conversation/quote that took place. He was asked a question and answered it truthfully. Now, you can argue that he should have kept his cards more to his chest but I don't see a problem in how he has handled it. It 100% would of been leaked regardless.
People are acting / commenting like he arranged a special media conference to only announce that Spezza refused a trade.
Complete nonsense |

Murray makes good trades from time to time, but he makes as many undoable trades he likes to tell everyone about for some strange reason - to me he uses the fans in Ottawa against the players and I don't buy into it - they tried to get me to dislike Alfie that's how low they are willing to go - you do what Alfie did for Ottawa and you get burnt bridges on the way out of town. Same with Redden and Spezza - these are guys that were class acts for the team and the exit is always ugly. (Heatley was a little SOB but he got it worst of all a Murray and Melnyk really worked to get the fans to despise him, they essentially ruined whatever reputation and good will Heatley had, right or wrong I thought it was a bit heavy handed) |

Runblad
St Louis - Tarasenko
Ottawa - Turris
Arizona - 2nd round pick
Chicago - Runblad
Arizona could turn out ok, but probably not. St Louis & Ottawa did great. Chicago ended up with him, so they lose.

That news conference was clearly to announce that he had traded a 6th round pick next year for a 7th rounder this year, just to say he had done something!! (his words, not mine)...
I think he's a good GM, but when you are openly admitting to being consistently ripped off as you discuss trading a star player, it's hard for people you negotiate with to take you seriously.
Maybe he got a form of Stockholm syndrome during the Heatley saga that he's never recovered from, starting to sympathize with his enemies too much... |
