I just want one, good, high potential type young player. It's the quantity for quality that I don't much care for... And a late first or 2nd doesn't have as much value as people say it does. - Mr_Clean
having two 1sts in next years draft would be AWESOME |

Yeah, but given the choice between a 2nd/3rd line-ceiling young player and very late first and a 1st/2nd line young player straight up, I'd go for the latter.
If we got the former, though, that would also be decent I suppose... |

Could always use the late 1st to trade up or even to trade down and maybe get two 2nd round picks and end up with 2 prospects that had first round potential but slipped to the 2nd round. |

Best case scenario is Statsny goes back to Colorado and StL and Chicago go for Spezza. I would love to see JS play for Chicago and win a cup. I think Chicago has a few interesting pieces that could come back.
I wouldn't mind seeing Spezza for Sharp - straight up. Not sure why Chicago would do that, but it unloads some money past the 2014-15 season. Ottawa likely has to sweeten that deal...perhaps throw in a PRINCE or someone of that prospect status. |

This is the lineup that I think most of us would be happy with.
Spezza traded to Nashville for Filip Forsberg.
Sign UFA Christian Ehrhoff @ 6mil/year average.
Sign UFA Milan Michalek @ 3.5mil/year.

He'll be forced to once Stastny runs off to either St.Louis or stays in Colorado. Who's going to feed James Neal? Mike Fisher? I don't think so. |

My thoughts, watching Yzerman do his dealing.
Gagner coming from Edmonton then flipped to Arizona makes you think contracts for expensive secondary players are very hard to move.
Oshie would be a very nice return. Oshie + Berglund would be a character changing move for the Senators.
I would like that team a lot. |

i would be happy with that deal if it was straight up for oshie....hell, i'd add boro just to clear that spot.
then ottawa goes hard after ehrhoff (or niskanen) and tries to sign kulemin
next year, we look like
macarthur - turris - ryan
oshie - zibanejad - stone
hoffman - lazar - kulemin
greening - smith - neil
pageau
karlsson - ehrhoff/niskanen
methot - cowen
wiercioch - phillips/gryba
let ceci get a good solid year of top pairing minutes in the AHL |

i'm wondering, now that there are so many good UFA d-men (some of who have top pairing potential) if murray isn't tempted to include a D-man into that deal, and maybe get those 2 players, and maybe include a forward too
spezza - methot - neil
oshie - berglund
then i die and go to heaven.....or maybe that other place. |

I was thinking on a variation of that in assuming that St. Louis jumps ahead of the pack and signs Hemsky today!

Straight delusion happening on these boards - Sam Gagnher just got traded for a 6th round draft pick, anyone who thinks Spezza brings back Oshie is smoking crack with Rob Ford
Spezza is now a salary dump - expect a deal like:
Berglund, 2nd rounder
Connelly, 2nd rounder

I think this week end is a huge reality check for some teams. The cap came in at $69m. More important, Bettman said 5% growth in hockey related revenues appears like a very positive forecast going forward. And, the increase this year takes into account the new TV deal.
So, you have four or five teams already having to deal with serious cap trauma. But, it is going to get a lot worse. RFAs like Subban and ROR and others have huge expectations of wanting to cash in now. Pending UFAs like Toews and Kane indicated that the opening request on a new long term deal is $12m per on a long term deal.
Economic growth in any business is often an issue of velocity. Think of it as a fast moving train that goes faster and faster. But, at some point the train slows down comes to a hill and, suddenly, the velocity is not sufficient it is missing a level of raw engine power that the previous velocity masked. This year the NHL had a bumper year after the lock out. They will be lucky to make 5%. The train is slowing down, we topped out on the new TV deals and you are beginning to see some teams beginning to react.
Right now cap space is King! There are teams that are not going to be able to sign some of their own players (Boston, Toronto, Rangers, Flyers, Hawks and more).
It made no sense to sign Spezza to a long term deal beyond next year. Ottawa is in very good shape. |

ah, so you were implying including his rights in a trade?
the blues don't really need hemsky though, at least not for the probably 4-5 years he's gonna want on a deal.
if they could get him for 1-2 years, then maybe......but doubt he'd go for that.
also, i can't see the blues trading for spezza until they find out where stastny signs.....after that, if they don't get him, then i imagine their desperation for spezza increases significantly |

My guess is that 27 teams already know they are "not" getting Stastny. If you are not getting the call backs, your out. So, I assume it is Colorado or A or B. And both A and B know who they are |
