wrong teams like nashville need someone like vinny since players like spezza won't go there - 2Real
Forgot to add that the 34-year-old center has a no-trade.
Man, if we get out of this one unscathed, I'm getting drunk |

but why trade for gagner in the first place? - 2Real
It's bizarre; as the thread noted, his buyout would cost less than Purcell's
We don't know anything about that, because we don't believe teams acquire players just to buy them out

So, in summation, the Oilers traded a 24-year-old center set to make $4.4 million for Teddy Purcell; not bad.
The Lightning, who wanted to,dump, the salary, got a 6th-round pick from a team that was starving for a center -- and is eating 1/3 of the salary
Yeah, dumping the four remaining years of a 34-year-old center is gonna be easy as (frank)ing pie - AllInForFlyers

They will, UFAs aren't exactly lining up to play in Miami. Tallon has to be creative to build a roster. Vinny does have value as a second line center, especially on a first PP unit that needs help. The Flyers won't get much for him.
Spezza has no interest in playing there. They would have to severely over pay to attract Statsny. They're not exactly a large market team. Richards is small and old. Vinny at least has size and name appeal in the Florida market, and more importantly apparently has no problem playing in that market. |

From what Stephen Whyno has posted on twitter:
The Oilers traded Gagner for Purcell, and Yzerman was going to buy him out to clear cap. Right after the deal, Don Maloney called Edmonton asking for Gagner and was told he was traded, so Maloney called Yzerman and said he'd work out a deal for Gagner.
The money retained by Yzerman is what he would have had against the cap if he had bought out Gagner anyhow, plus he ditched Crombeen's salary |

Not really, they now have a solid team on paper and $10mm to add to it in free agency |

You mean an NHL.team.does.acquire players in order.to.buy them out? Don't these executives read HB? You are supposed to only acquire.players so they can fulfill.their contracts |

I would be surprised if the Lightning have an internal budget to spend to the ceiling for payroll. They have a nice pipeline of prospects to help keep their labor costs down.
Bishop is gonna to need a substantial pay increase after the upcoming season. Of course, in two summers, Stamkos is on the horizon. |

That could be a factor as well, but several reporters are saying they'll be active in UFA |

yeah the rumors of Umberger for Gagner before the Flyers traded for him had me thinking we'd flip Umberger for Gagner and buy him out. Hexy has different plans I guess. |

Gagner's not that great a player. Career highs of 18 goals & 49 points. Hell, Vinny scored more goals and had as many points despite having an awful year and injury. |
