So PHX gets two NHL players, one a RSA 24-yo former 6th-overall pick, for just a single 6th-rounder... meanwhile it takes ANA two picks to nab Nate (frank)ing Thompson... I guess expecting this poop to make some kind of sense would be asking too much. |

And we as fans speak as if we know exactly what a Shea Weber costs. I'm not sure Nashville knows what Weber should cost. |

Well, from what was reported, Yzerman was trading for Gagner to buy him out, because the cost to do it was less than it would have been for Purcell. While the trade call was going through, Arizona called Edmonton to ask about Gagner and was told he was traded.
So Arizona called Tampa to get a crack at Gagner before he hit UFA, and flipped them a 6th rounder and took Crombeen. Tampa agreed to eat the 1/3rd of Gagner's contract that would have been their hit anyhow had they simply bought him out.
So rather than dead space from a buy out, Tampa got Crombeen off the books and got a 6th rounder, rather than simply dumping Purcell for a guy they were going to buy out.
I'm guessing had they not got the call from Arizona, Yzerman would have bought out Gagner, traded Crombeen for a 6th and then Thompson for the 4th & 7th. Of course, it's very possible Edmonton wanted Purcell, and tipped Arizona off opening the door for Maloney to get a crack at a player he wanted (Gagner) before he was on the open market. |

Expensive price to pay for cap space IMHO but I guess they made the best of a bad situation.
I'm putting in out there, I want Del Zotto for Vinny and a pick. Then trade Grossman and a low pick for Parentau.

I'm guessing they were going to dump Purcell regardless, so at least they were proactive. |

Me either, but you have to put your desires out into the universe if you wish for them to come true. I believe commonly the universe provides.

And the Flyers don't have cap problems...Hextall's just BSing when he said he's working on that - AllInForFlyers
The Flyers have the same cap problem that every single team in the League has. A limited amount of cap space to use to build a team.
Here is an exact quote from Hextall
""First on my agenda right now is to go back to the Skate Zone and take a look at our cap," said Flyers general Ron Hextall immediately after the Draft ended. "We have the hard number now, so we’ve got to look at it and see where we can try to maneuver."
What makes this different from any other year. And where does Hextall state that they have Cap problems? |

The really silly part about that was that with Umberger, we just suggested that they might want to buy him out two years from now. And then we were told that the Flyers management wouldn't have even thought about the possibility. - Feanor
The Flyers are going to buy out Umberger?
And if you're referring to me with that statement, please be accurate. I stated that I don't think the Flyers acquired Umberger with the plan of buying him out two years from now. |

You also stated.that NHL.teams don't acquire.players with the intention of.buying them out, but that's ok -- we all remember who said what, and it is pretty clear that some.of us have a pretty good idea how professional sports.work |

I guess he's heading back to the Skate Zone to...not.work on getting the Flyers compliant? When, by definition, when you're not compliant, there is a problem?
LTIR and summer overages are.great...but at the end of the day, they are going to shed salary. That is the bottom line |

How many times has a team traded for a player for the purpose of buying the player out? Name how many times it has happened? There are always outliers. Something happens once and I guess it's a regular thing. And you might want to go back and look at exactly what I said. |

That is the problem, you don't know what not being compliant is. The Flyers have never been not cap compliant, including now. I know the exact numbers to the dollar.
The Flyers do not have to shed salary to be cap compliant as it stands right now. That is a fact. They may choose to shed salary to do some other things to improve the team. But they do not need to shed salary to be compliant.
I posted the exact dollar figures on the new thread. |

Don't get mad at.me because you were incorrect; trying to claim there are always outliers -- which there are -- means that it does happen, which means that it is entirely and completely possible that Umberger.could.and will be bought out, which is what I said. It was all.that we said.
You didn't have to argue the point. You chose to do so. And trying to dance around it doesn't change it,.because we all read it. |

Who is mad at you? You're just plain wrong.
Again, how many teams traded for a player with the purpose of buying him out in League history? It's a simple question.
I never stated that it was impossible for Umberberger to be bought out. Only that it's not likely why the Flyers made the deal. And if you think otherwise, you are again wrong about that. |
