I'm guessing that the plan was to move B. Schenn to LW and that Laviolette saw Vinny as a shooter that they could feed for one timers. Unfortunately Lecavalier didn't find a spot where he was effective under Berube.
The other thing is, Vinny could easily have been an Ohhhh Shiny! knee jerk reaction to a missing the playoffs. - Jsaquella
we had size issues and face off issues the prior year as well iirc. |

That's my point exactly.....it also doesn't make future signings of vets look very good when we give up after one year.....now would I trade him if it made team better ? Sure, but it appears the opposite is going to happen.
Oh and I'll try not to share your logic by posting on your behalf ! - landros 2
In the first place, there's a new GM, with a decidedly new view on things.
In the second, not many vets got scared off when they dumped Carter, Richards, JvR & Bryz after signing them to new deals.
Third, it's addition by subtraction. Certainly, they have to avoid making the team worse, but getting rid of a guy who doesn't fit and hurts their cap isn't a bad thing. |

Like the length of Bryzgalov's contract !!! Maybe that was the case, but I just think that with the position they are in to trade him, it might be better to find a way to make it work.....I still think he still can be very good. |

There's absolutely a line in the sand. When you're looking at what is essentially addition by subtraction, you must take care not to subtract too much. I'm thinking a pick, at most and maybe eating a small bit of money.
There'd be no way I trade a significant pick and prospect to move him. I'd just wait until a buyout became more tenable or where it got to a point where enough of the money had been paid a budget team would take him for help reaching the floor. - Jsaquella
I honestly think pronger could be pretty easily traded to get a team to the cap floor next offseason. He'll have 2 seasons remaining and an actually salary of $575,000 for each of those seasons. It would really help this club out a lot. |

They did.
I was a big Vinny advocate when they added him. Unfortunately, he looks finished as true star level player. They have a new direction and he's not a good fit for it. |

I just don't think he can be very good. Sure he can still get you goals and that isn't something to ignore, but he has to be used right. He's not a good two way player, doesn't skate especially well and found it really hard to adapt to a new role after the coaching change.

It's been said the the flyers have no interest in trading for evander kane - griouxmvp2012
Which is a mistake...If he is available then Hexy needs to make it happen... Go get the young goal scoring winger to play with Giroux....Do Hexy, do it now |

All true, but I would assume that Hextall had some input on Vinny ? And I still think Philly is an attractive place for free agents but those signings and sudden 360's doesn't paint organization in a very good light....it screams "knee jerk reaction" or a team that has no patience or no long term direction.....Hopefully Hextall changes that.
My argument is perhaps they look elsewhere to dump salary and find a spot for Vinny, if possible.....you might be right in the end.....just thinking out loud.

Hextall was the King's assistant GM when Lecavalier was signed.

I wasn't sure on the Hextall timing....but boy do they correct a lot of mistakes....and in the cap era, those tend to be killers.

They can add him, because they can go up to $75.9mm in off season...but they'd have to make some big moves to get under by opening day |

Well EK did say the Flyers were supposed to have a deal with a Western Conference team by yesterday! As usual he was wrong... That's a shocker!
Lets hope they can pull off a deal for that #1 LW position.
Hey has some cap work to do! |

That's the biggest issue I had with Holmgren. plan seemed to change way too often. Injuries were a factor, but geez. |

The Vinny signing by Homer, I would call a move that he made knowing his team he built missed the playoffs and is heir apparent was just added to the organization. He tried to load up to make a run last year to win it all. Also, I do wonder if B. Schenn was the centerpiece of a trade, he thought he would get done later in the offseason (ie B. Ryan). |

I hope Hexy stays away from Ehrhoff, he will be 32 when the season starts. Gotta believe he is going to command over $4 million on a new contract. If they could move Streit or AMac, then maybe Ehrhoff makes sense. Otherwise, gotta take a pass on this one.
Much rather use assets to acquire Bogosian or Josi. |

I'd like to see grossmann traded for cap relief before I see VL traded for it, if I had to choose. For what he brings to the table I'd rather see what Alt, Lauridsen, Manning, or MAB can do with an extended stay... or Gus if he is resigned.
I'd also be down with trading both VL and NG for cap space. |
