Just goes to show that the guys on WGR are not that smart....yeah Erhoff has more value than Myers......now what are they going to say?
I cant' believe that there was not a team that would not have taken Erhoff in a trade!
Sabres must be getting ready to spec some extra money on July 1 because otherwise they would not have needed Erhoff's money......it can't be because they are tanking......they already tanked with Erhoff in the line up.
PS the one caller who called in and said get rid of Erhoff because he would not pass the puck to Ristolannen had it right...Shope and the Bulldog....boy were you guys wrong!@!!!!! - RicoMartin
I have to think there were plenty, probably even a few Erhoff would waive for. This has to be about the recapture penalty, it's the only thing that makes sense.

According to Yahoo and blank the maximum recapture penalty would have been $10 million. If he retired with 1 year left on his contract, that would be the penalty. - LetsGoBuffalo75
Go to capgeek and you'll see the cap hit is 3M if he retires one year out. The earlier he retires the more years you spread it out. If he retired this year it would be a 1.4M hit for 7 years. Spillage |

You never know though....Buffalo could be heading into their biggest playoff run in history 7 years from now and want to add that 1 veteran piece but...".damn! Erhoff retired and we done come up short." |

This is an amazingly ignorant comment.
You have to give a new gm atleast a few years before you start making judgements on if he was the correct choice or not.
Also, by saying what you did above, you are implying Murray is an idiot and you know way more and would have never done what he did.
Thanks for your opinion champ.
Reed more. Post less. - bjm1717
No need to resort to name calling when someone has an opinion that differs from yours.
How can this be anything but tanking? Get rid of your best defencemen and the cap relief is minimal. Unless he had behavioral issues like Ribeiro |

Please explain what you mean by questioning his motives. - bjm1717
Well I wanna know why he did it. Extra cap space for a crazy UFA signing? A trade? An open defense roster spot? I just want to know what is his next move. |

If he retired without playing out his contract there would be a cap hit down the road for it. At that time Buffalo could be paying some big money to these young kids they got. |

The new CBA put in the buyouts to give teams to make up for the monster retirement contracts that were suddenly made illegal or subject to recapture.
Notice how the Hawks aren't using one on Hossa? The benefits outweigh a little penalty down the road (and yes, I know the windows are different) - muffin_man
the hawks used both of there buyouts smart one |

It was about the recapture penalty. And the more I think about it, the more I hate it. Worry about 2020 in 2020. I'd rather have got some sort of return for him. |

Yeah seems silly now....but it might turn out to be the best long term move. Funny, even if Erhoff didn't like any trade destinations this year, whats with the urgency? |

I honestly dont care how many they win as long as the beat the Islanders every time they play. So what's that? 3 games? So I hope they win at least 3 games.
Also it wouldnt surprise me if someone takes Ehrhoff off of the unconditional waivers. Any team is going to have to pay him more than 4mil if they sign him as a UFA. - Themomentgood
I hope the Islanders get the #1 overall pic in the next draft and we get #2 again, or even flip flop! How SWEET would it be to end up with McDavid AND Eichel!!! |

That hasn't been said 10,000,000 times yet. I have a feeling the Islanders will somehow be better this year. Don't ask me how. |

The highest the penatly gets is $3M. Whats the problem???
http://www.capgeek.com/recapture-grid
If he plays 5 more years, he will still be good for 3 years during which Buffalo intends to be a good team. You're buying out a top 4 dman with a great cap hit because you fear 3 years of a $3M cap penalty??? - muffin_man

Connor McDavid. - FinAddict
I was wrong about the penalty. If he retires with 1 year left its 10M which matters.
As for McDavid, even with Ehrhoff, they are guaranteed a top 2 pick. This draft is stacked in the top 2 like Malkin/Ovechkin was |

I think they did it to avoid the penalty for when they hope to be competitive, and the opportunity to suck even more this year was just a bonus |

Murray did what was good for business...we finished last with him, he wasn't going to propel us out of last place and he didn't want to be here.

Days were counting down for the end of the Compliance buyouts. It's do it now or not at all and be screwed 3 years from now. |

That would have been if he retired as a sabre, scroll down. Its 10 million if he was traded. |
