The Sabres were on the hook for it not the team trading for him. Which is why Murray needed to get a huge return for him which he wasn't going to get

Even if they traded him and he retired with one year left on his contract the Sabres would be penalized with a $10mil as a consequence of the front loaded contract. By that time the Sabres will be at the salary cap and wont be able to afford that penalty. Buying him out was really the only option he had other than keep him and buy him out down the road before he retires, but Ehrhoff made it clear he wanted out.

Come free agency I expect the sabres to sign 3rd and 4th liners with the exception of a moulson. On the back end you will see 5th or 6th d men that are over the age of 30 i.e tallinder
