FWIW:
•Anthony Petrelli: A commenter on MLHS said that Philly Sports Radio 94WIP was saying that the Flyers have three offers from Vincent Lecavalier: Scottie Upshaw from the Panthers, Tim Gleason from the Maple Leafs and draft picks from the Stars.

- J35Bacher

I'm hoping we get Upshaw back.

So.. quick question.. Name other teams that had to use both buy-outs, trade a few big contracts, and had to trade other players and picks to sweeten the deal in order to clear up space.

Name a single team even.

- jak521

The Rangers used both buyout (Redden/Richards), traded a few big contracts (Gomez being the biggest), but have yet to " trade other players and picks to sweeten the deal in order to clear up space" which I don't think the Flyers have yet done either.

Hextall on CSNPhilly:

“That is what I kind of put out there. We do need relief and if you have any ideas, give me a shout. It’s not an option, but there are teams out there that need help. We’ll see where it goes.”

- Flyers_01

Already saw that. They're looking to move a player that they might not think fits going forward in order to do something else. That's a choice that they've made.

At least the Flyers didn't sign Jeff Finger and David Clarkson right?

He had his better moments here, for sure. His contract was still awful, and they're beyond lucky they got a mulligan.

Just going to throw this out there: Just because you have choices, doesn't mean you didn't put yourself in a bad position.

Also, the Ilya Bryzgalov contract was terrible from day 1.

- BulliesPhan87

Do you think they felt they were putting themselves in a bad position by signing Bryzgalov at the time.

Yup Tampa is a prime example. Bought out Vinny and Malone. Traded Purcell for Gagner who along with Crombeen they turned into a 6th and cap space. Moved Nate Thompson for picks too.

Edit: In no way am I happy with our salary cap situation, but we aren't alone. Just hope they learn from this for the future (doubtful since they didn't the last time).

- five4fighting10

Tampa Bay is a good example. They gave a bad contract to Vinny... and tried to dump him over the years.. finally bought him out. Malone was a terrible contract as well.. Now had the whole buy-out thing not come to fruition they would be (frank)ed.. and so would we. We got two mulligans, and that is helping us keep our core together today..

The biggest problem the Flyers have is that they dont look to far in the future. Seems as though Hexy is trying to change that.

I think they looked at the immediate future (2 seasons top) and realized they were (frank)ed when it blew up in their face. They were extremely lucky to be able to get a re-do with him.

Does whether they felt that way really impact the reality of the situation?

Mismanagement was adding them to the fold... Mismanagement was spending 13.75 million in cap space on Streit, AMac and Grossmann...

13.75 million also nets
Doughty, Voynov, Greene

Pieterangelo, Shattenkirk, Gunnarsson

Fowler, Beauchemin, Allen

Suter, Spurgeon, Ballard

...

We give big pays to guys to play because we HAVE to.. desperation = higher spending = higher probability of a bad contract.

- jak521

That's not cap mismangement. It's player choices.

That the Flyers have not drafted and developed defenseman well, is a legitimate criticism. But again, that is not cap management. It's player development.

No, but we're making that judgement after the fact, and by knowing how it worked out.

If Bryzgalov had played lights out to a Vezina level, and elevated the Flyers as a team, would it have been a mistake?

The difference? Tampa Bay has about $9.5mm in cap room and moved those contracts out to clear room to gear up to make a run this year. The Flyers are trying to move one of last year's big money and attention getting free agent additions to have enough room to add a back-up goalie

Gagne and a 2nd for Matt Walker?
Upshall and a 2nd for Carcillo?

Both of those moves were in the " trade other players and picks to sweeten the deal in order to clear up space" category... at least I think they would fit the criteria.

They were extremely lucky that the CBO's were included in the CBA. Lots of teams were.

Actually, the Gagne trade was him for Walker and a 4th. But the point stands.

I tried to remove the entire thing from my memory.. thank you.

Come to think of it... Probably the biggest piece of cap mismanagement was signing Grossmann before Carle, and then having Carle out price himself. No tagging space left for Carle.. he hits UFA and gets paid handsomely, Flyers couldnt or wouldnt match.

The Upshall one I'm not certain about. But yes, the Gagne one (which I would have dealt with differently) was one I'll give you. But that was, what, 5 seasons ago? Not like they do it on the norm.

Absolutely. Like you said, the Flyers use their buy-outs on Bryz and Danny and then a year later are in another bad spot with Vinny. I would have absolutely no problem keeping Vinny if the right deal doesn't come along, but I am hopeful for Hexy's eye on the future and not just the present.
