The difference? Tampa Bay has about $9.5mm in cap room and moved those contracts out to clear room to gear up to make a run this year. The Flyers are trying to move one of last year's big money and attention getting free agent additions to have enough room to add a back-up goalie
- Jsaquella

The Flyers have the room to add a backup goalie and more, without making a single move.

No, but we're making that judgement after the fact, and by knowing how it worked out.

I could have sworn you just wrote this two pages ago:

Exactly what has Upshall done that is so great since he left the Flyers, that make it such a big loss?

Unfortunately we have paid top 3 money on 3 middle to bottom pairing guys.

Whether or not they thought it did is not the question. Whether it did or not is.
- funmaster18

Of course it's a move that didn't work out. That's going to happen some.

The Upshall one I'm not certain about. But yes, the Gagne one (which I would have dealt with differently) was one I'll give you. But that was, what, 5 seasons ago? Not like they do it on the norm.
- jmatchett383

The Upshall one was so they could bring Giroux up from the AHL. Homer had a max cap and couldnt bring G up. So he trade Upshall AND a second for Dan Carcillo and cap space.

If true simmer was the deal breaker in any trade for #1, then bravo to hexy for standing tall. Who knows if homer would have resisted. IMO this draft class just not worth a huge trade, now if it was next years with eichel, Mcdavid and company then thats a different story.

Very true, good call. They didn't have to make the salary dumping moves they just made to get cap-compliant and they still weren't able to get good returns in terms of draft picks. Of course cap space has a lot of value too, but yeah, after seeing the Gagner return, I'm not expecting a deal for Vinny that I'll be too happy with.

My judgement of those moves is not based on how it turned out. I was fine with the moves when they happened.

So... on to more interesting topics:

Deadling for QO offers is 4PM today... I suspect some really interesting young players are about to become UFA's... Tyler Cuma, Jordan Caron, MDZ, etc.

- Tomahawk

I am really curious about that. With the cap being lower then expected teams might have to let some guys go because of other things that need to get done. Might be some low risk/high reward types.

Just trying to keep everyone honest.

In my opinion, it was a bad deal from the start, but I understand way they do it. Though I disagreed with it

If Bryzgalov had played lights out to a Vezina level, and elevated the Flyers as a team, would it have been a mistake?

- MJL

If he had scored 20 goals per season and won a Vezina, it would've been a great contract.

Wasn't there a bunch of injuries that year to the defense. And didn't the Flyers have to go out and trade for Andrew Alberts early in the season?

I kind of think, for better or worse, Holmgren was probably very happy to get Carcillo too. Maybe he actually overpaid for Carcillo, instead of overpaying for cap space?

No they aren't Which is why I suspect they want to move Lecavalier to do something bigger then just add a back up goalie.

That was their choice. They didnt have to go and sign anyone.
