He was a top six pick....unfortunately for him and the Oilers, he's never really done enough to justify that kind of return. Carer high of 18 goals and 49 points. He's a mediocre to poor defensive player. - Jsaquella

I really think he did. I would have preferred a one-for-one trade, but it wasn't like he traded for a guy who was going to be demoted or a healthy scratch. - jmatchett383
In retrospect Carcillo hasn't turned into the player Holmgren believed he was getting. But I agree with you, I don't think that move was a straight salary dump. The media at the time may have sold it that way.
Couldn't they have just waived Upshall if they wanted money freed up and they were done with him? |

It would be really cool if we could get a perspective on that option from a Detroit or Pittsburgh guy since those two teams took that difficult road this past season. - Feanor
The Flyers have taken it in the recent past. During 2008-09, the Flyers lost two serviceable players on waivers(Metropolit & Vaananen). They made a cap move to bring up their top young prospect at the TDL.

Carcillo was coming off a rookie season where he had 13/11/24/324. That season, he had 3/7/10/124.
Upshall that year had 7/14/21/63.
But yeah, that was a total cap dump. No way the thought that a guy on his ELC who put up 13 goals in his rookie year on a bad team may turn out the be better than a guy who put up 7 on a good team. - jmatchett383
I might be able to actually bring myself to believe that... until you look at what he had done leading up to the trade.. In the prior two seasons he played 79 games scored 20 goals and added 23 assists. He was also a chippy energetic player who racked up 82 pim and was a +6.
Carcillo was the inferior player. |

that most certainly was a weird deal.
so it was gagner to TB for purcell.
then TB essentially just dumping gagner?
i can see the yotes point of view. why not? what else they have going?
TB just essentially rid itself of purcells salary? and edmonton got grittier? - stayinthefnnet
According to Rishaug, EDM is stamp-collecting strong possession players... Nikitin, Purcell, supposedly they're hot on Fayne, too.
TB was just salary-dumping like a boss.
PHX was just digging through the trash again. |

9 year contract for Bryzgalov. 9 years .....when there were no other suitors.
fire a coach 3 games in. ya thats normal.
sign an aging center when you have 3 young centers at the NHL level already with high upside.
The Cap # is 69 million....and no I don't feel the need to explain all the ins and outs and the holes. you can take the time if you want to and dazzle me with your knowledge or lack there of.
if thats your arguement thats your weakest yet...by far...you argue pennies when its the dollars and the poor management of the cap in previous years that is the issue. - landros 2
The guy who did all that was promoted.
I'm going to use this formula and turn into Barney Fife. I'll make Captain in no time!

They got the best of both worlds.. they freed up cap space and got a roster player in return..
The problem I have with it is that they needed to include a 2nd rounder...
I believe they ended up using that pick to draft Lucas Lessio. |

good for edmonton. may finally have a good mix. when they do, look out.
i always thought purcell was fairly decent. if TB is salary dumping, i wonder what theyre up to. erhoff to play with hedman?
and PHX, i really want them to hit on something soon. they deserve it |

Based on the players they drafted they've started the draft and develop mindset, can they keep doing that in the future we must wait and find out. - ob18
The only complaint I had about this draft was that they consistently drafted sub 6' players. What was with all the guys my height and under? |

I know we're comparing him to the great Scotty Upshall who once scored 14 goals as a Flyer at the time of the trade and was on pace for a whopping 10 the season he was traded, but I think Homer thought Carcillo would bring more to the team than Upshall. |

I'll cheer for Phoenix after the NHL has directly financially supported the other 28 teams. I'll never cheer for NJ. |

From what was reported, the Purcell trade was due to the buy out rules. Purcell being 26 required a 2/3rds buyout where Gagner at age 24 was a 1/3 buyout cost.
Apparently during the trade call, Arizona called Edmonton about Gagner and was told he was traded to Tampa and what the deal was, and then Maloney called Tampa to make a pitch for Gagner.
Either way it worked out. Tampa got the smaller buy out for Gagner, plus a 6th for Crombeen. Edmonton got a solid winger for Gagner & Arizona got a replacement for Riberio for a minimal cost |

Nope. Sheer overspending. The Flyers spent up to the cap and had to juggle when injuries hit. |

That they didn't have D prospects in the system to help replace certainly is a criticism everyone recognizes contributes to their "pay for free agent defensemen" problem, but it's pretty clear the past two drafts that they're moving to ensure (as much as they can) that they do have those replacements in the future. The key will be to continue drafting and developing well even once those guys become ready to go. They can't go back and redo the old drafts and pick better players so that they would have already been here. All they can do today is start to be better in that area today. - eayost
