3 years of Streit at $5.25M per or 6 years of MacDonald at $6M per? Who do you keep?
- jmatchett383

Is the correct answer Wade Redden?

He's developed into a poor man's Streit who is defensively inferior to Streit. I don't know if I'd call that developed.
- jmatchett383

Third in TOI in Buffalo this year at just over 20 min P/G; 2:41 P/G on the PP, 1:02 on the PK. 6 goals, 17 points.

McBain was a -13. Two guys ahead of him in ice time? Tyler Myers, -26. Christian Ehrhoff, -27.

113 blocked shots; 31 giveaways, the least on Buffalo out of all starting dmen to play at least 60 games.

Guy is a decent bottom pairing defender.

If MacDoanld was on a 2 or 3 year deal at $3mm or so, I would never complain about him.
- Jsaquella

Yeah well, D-men are expensive, especially ones that had been good yet making the league minimum on a crappy team. I wish his cap hit was smaller too, it's not. I have a feeling that Hexy is not going to be in the future about handing out long contracts. But right now, MacDonald is making about what most decent 2-3 Defensemen make, even though he's more of a 3-4 guy. With the cap constantly going up, in 3 years 5 mil for a Defensemen might be a steal. Anyone remember when Jeff Carter's deal was "Huge"?

In dream-land? Neither.

I don't think the Flyers will find a taker for Streit via trade. In that case I'd be looking to move MacDonald yes.

You can say hindsight all you want but if the Flyers don't give a career contract to Macdonald, they would have kept their 3rd round pick this year and 2nd rounder next year.

As well as having more flexibility to sign a player of a better caliber and fit in Ehrhoff.

I'm not disagreeing. If Homer knew Ehrhoff was going to be a UFA, maybe the deal doesn't get made. But when you're looking at a likely UFA class of Niskanen and then everyone else, you lock up what you can. The landscape has changed.

I am not a Holmgren fan. I think he is a moron that loves to overpay for mediocrity, and puts far too little value on draft picks. Far too about win now, with no long term plan and a headless chicken routine.

He has a strong jaw though. I will always give him that.

He was obviously holding some things back from Shea. McBain is in line for about 7 straight Norris Trophies. If only he didn't play for Buffalo, he'd be a guy putting up 120-point seasons and be a +477 every year.

They can use his benefits.

They either need to be under $69mm by the start of the season or $4.91mm over to maximize his benefits. If they're at $69.5mm, they get only $500K of benefits

- Jsaquella

Ah I see thanks for the clarification.

I had a mancrush on McBain a couple years ago when he was still with Carolina. But nowadays, I would take him as a depth guy only. Would not feel comfortable penciling him in as an every day #6 dman.

So... nobody could foresee that teams would use the last of the CBO window to erase recapture risks and bad contracts? Really?

He made some very good moves (Coburn, Forsberg, Hartnell/Timmo) early on, but I think he was at 50/50 afterwards. He DID, however, get Mason for Leighton and a 3rd, and that's looking pretty darn good right now. I'm rate him as a B- GM given his competition.
