In the Pronger case he was getting a guy still playing at a near Norris worthy level, in MacDonald's case, he was getting a fairly easy to replace guy. - Jsaquella
Pronger was changing his style to extend his career but yes he was playing at a high level still at age 34. It doesn't mean you sign him until he's 42.
The biggest problem for me is you either give the picks or the money. Because of the way it all went down the Flyers paid the premium in picks and a premium in money. They paid through the nose at both ends for a guy would be retired at least 2 years before the end of his contract. |

Yeah really. I mean he says he wants to be a Blue Jacket, well then, sign the bridge deal that you SHOULD get and prove to them that they should sign you to the long term. - Streit2ThePoint
Spoiled ass rich kid.
Play hard-ball with him. Jarmo Kekalainen seems to be a solid guy. Like him. |

Every year at this time, defensive defencemen get bought out, and then on July 1st, teams shell out huge $ for other defensive defencemen.

I like Igor Larionov's theory: "The best defence is when we have the puck."
Gord Miller @GMillerTSN · 8m
I know that being a GM is a hard job, but when you look at good teams, they simply don't pay $3m+ for Dmen who don't pass the puck well.

Well, the deal was signed with an obvious eye to him retiring at age 40, considering the drop off in salary at the end. It sure seems like the Flyers figured they'd be clever and sign him before age 35 & the money would come off the cap. |

Yes, they paid through the nose, and unfortunately it didn't work out. I loved that they got him, though. And iirc, his contract was structured so that the last couple years would pay him pocket change. |

If people recall Eklund said that the Flyers are involved in a big deal with a Western Canadian Team. Anyone who reads Eklund's rumours knows that they are never right and always the opposite happens. Example: JVR to the Leafs and it is not for Luke Schenn So I deciphered the rumour and got: The Flyers are involved in a small deal with an Eastern American team. Vinny to Florida CONFIRMED |

I agree with that assessment. I really think there was no way that Holmgren could tell the truth after the Flyers were told otherwise.
I'd say it's all ancient history at this point if we didn't have the ghost of Pronger's cap hit still haunting the Flyers.
Hopefully, as others have mentioned, they can trade his cap hit next year.

One minor detail was glossed over in that deal. How old Pronger was as it pertains to the new contract he signed |

They had years to reinforce the idea that Matt Carle was terrific and he was a perfect part of the mix... AMac was given 6-years after one month in uniform.
Really not sure how the two can be viewed as parallels. - Tomahawk
They hung around looking for a better Defensemen than Carle waiting for Suter to call, when Carle simply moved on. The idea that trading for AMac and then waiting while we looke for better options is the parallel I'm drawing. Bird in the hand situation.

Didn't gloss over it. It's seems pretty clear they thought they found a loop hole. |
