There were two or three valid points, but it really exaggerated some of the negatives.

[quote=MJL]Yes it could change for sure. But you know what, I don't want to be one of those teams that has holes in the lineup and has 6M of cap space left over at the end of the year. I think that's a waste. I like how the Flyers approach the cap.

Is it possible the Flyers buy out RJ ( as suggested in the Dailey News) instead of VL?
Buying out Hartnell would have been a lot more coin compared to buying out RJ.
I am hoping Hextall can add a #1 LW, but maybe it is through a trade.
Like you said they always find a way to manage that cap and put a good team on the ice.

Dumping Vinny also gives them cap room, removes a guy who doesn't really help at 5 on 5, & allows them to keep a young developing Brayden Schenn at center

What fustrated me is watching what Steve Y is doing down in Tampa and knowing the Flyers can't do the same thing.

He has stacked that team with prospects and draft picks. So much so that he can trade a guy like Purcell for nothing more then a salary dump to clear up cap space to sign a player in free agency that will fill a need.

The Flyers on the other hand trade picks left and right to the point they dont have many forward prospects (yes i know they do have some D prospects) and have no second or 3rd round picks as of today for the 2015 draft.

I love what Tampa is doing and they are set up to be a force for the forseeable future.

I know the Flyers and Tampa situations aren't apples to apples my point is more to point out that when you keep your kids and build with draft picks you gain flexability.

In Hextall I trust!

Yzerman isn't handcuffed, in terms of clearing space, by long deals to older players. Purcell is only signed for two more seasons. Same with Gagner. The other moves are moves anyone can do. The Flyers could probably dump Rinaldo for a 4th & 7th or get a 6th rounder for Adam Hall or Rosehill.

Hell, if Vinny had only two years left instead of four, he'd probably be easy to trade.

Seemed like a fairly solid draft from everything I've read. Pretty safe, not many reaches. I've seen draft grades from C+ to B+.

Good to see some legit defensive prospects in the pipeline. Flyers could be set up nicely on the backend in 3-4 years.

Not sure what to expect tomorrow, Hextall is going to have to get creative to improve the team.

Before he hurt his back and was playing 2nd line center exclusively. He was our best goal scorer. Then he was shuffled around the lineup and had a bad back. I dont think the team was fair to him. I would like to give him another year. I mean we are talking about a potential hall of famer. He is 34 but he isnt a dinosaur.

The guy is a moron. He criticizes Holmgren for signing the player to a deal after only having a small sample size of games to look at the player. But he is perfectly willing to criticize the player on the same sample size of games!

Here's the thing: Anytime all of the GMs are in the same geographic vicinity (i.e.--the draft, GM meetings, etc), writers get all hot and bothered over ALL TEH TRADEZ that could happen. Eklund is far from the only one who does this, by the way.

The salary cap absolutely puts a limit on trades that can be done. That's just how it is in the league now, so I don't get my hopes up anymore for a flurry of trade activity.

No doubt, my point was more of a, they can dump Percell because they have a guy like Droin waiting in the wings. This move gives them an adequate replacement for Percell while at the same time filling a need, most likely a hole on defense, through free agency.

Yes I get that. I am one of the many that doesnt think too highly of Schenn. His skill set is more of a glorified grinder. He doesnt have a great shot, or pass, and skating is average. Basic puck skills. Hopefully I am proven wrong. I just cant see the upside.
- GOA88

The key is who you put him with. Hartnell - Schenn - Simmonds was never a good fit. I think Schenn would actually do better with Jake, and maybe someone like Read (given current roster).

But the issue then is weakening the 1st line. Simmonds moving up to 1 is fine, but then you need a skilled sniper type on the left. That player doesn't exist in Flyers system.

There is not a problem with the way the Flyers manage the cap. They are a cap team, and they choose to maximize that asset. It is by plan, not by mismanagement.
- MJL

Could be worse. I'd rather them have drafted this kid then Derek Mathers. Or Garrett Klotz. Or Tyrell Goulbourne. etc etc etc.

TB missed the playoffs five out the last seven seasons and got three top three picks. Drouin would be an amazing winger to put with Giroux.

Hey Bill,

Would it be fair to say that Mike Weaver is a NHL comparable for Jesper Pettersson? They are about the same size, small but stocky, and seem to play a similar style. Just wondering if Pettersson might have the edge in offensive skills. I know you mentioned Pettersson makes smart pinches.

I really like the Pettersson pick and the Lindblom pick. I hope Hextall found some late round gems.

agreed....Holmgren"s signing of Macdonald is not even close to the worst move he's made.....In fact, I like Macdonald.....He may be slightly overpaid, but he makes the backend better. He's still fairly young and in my view is a very good two way d man.
