Oh Gee that's right! They owned MacDonald's rights up until tomorrow!!Wow, they could have gone into free agency, especially with the last week being an open negotiation week and kicked the tires on several of the pending UFAs and if they decided MacDonald was the best fit, then they could have re-signed him!
Glad they didn't wait. Somebody could have swooped in after game 6 and stolen him away! - Jsaquella

All 5 did make it to UFA, I provided a list that include 4 or 5 other names as well. - Jsaquella

Nope. There's no guarantee they would have signed. Guess what?
they still owned MacDonald's rights and could have kicked the tires and then come back around and signed him. - Jsaquella
Whn a guy is hitting FA for the first time if he would get that close to FA i am sure his agent would have advised him to see what the market brought. Knowing what numbers might be out there for and teams looking for defense after Niskanen as an agent I would have said "we are this close, lets get you paid" |

Assuming he liked being strung along and didn't want more, yes. - jmatchett383
What's strung along? You conduct talks. It's a business. The Habs and Markov didn't get a new deal done until after the season. Same goes for Hainsey and Carolina. |

Robidas broke his leg twice last year and is 37. He's not anywhere near MacDonald right now. Talinder is old and slow. Nikitin, Hainsey and Markov didn't make it to FA.
Your list should really be Stralman, Fayne and Morris. - Feanor
I would limit it even further to just Stralman in that list. |

i'm thrilled. i love what's happening right now. slowly turning the aircraft carrier around. i also have a sneaking suspicion we're going to hit on at least one, if not 2 of our late rounders in this draft. especially this jesper character. man, would i love a little plug swedish dman to run around and level every single piece of poop in blue, red and white. - hammarby31
I agree Im very excited about the direction that Hexy seems to be taking this orginization. Very excited and optimistic about the D prospects we have in our system. It's just that the same old tired arguments over and over again about how someone's overpaid, cap problems, CORSI, ect is gratting on my sanity. It's not just here but everywhere. I wish people would just sit back for a second and enjoy the ride instead of constantly stressing and whining over crap that they have no control over. |

OH NO, we would have lost MacDonald!! then we would have had to sign one of the other 5 or 6 guys out there who were similar. |

And after we gave up assets to acquire this 39-year-old defenseman who has to be sheltered for 5-on-5 matchups, and we pay him $6M for 3 years, we're supposed to applaud it? - jmatchett383
Assets=5th round pick. Sheltered= 3rd highest Even Strength Ice Time on the team. 3 years=2 years (what he wanted from San Jose). People would probably not applaud it, I was just stating my opinion. Keep in mind, I am of the belief that the Flyers cup window is 3-4 years away, and try to base my decision making on that. |

Well it's like Carle. Had they signed him as soon as their offseason began, maybe Wideman doesn't sign his deal and Carle doesn't want more, and you don't lose out on every UFA (and RFA) defenseman you want. He was the bird in the hand, and he beat the 2 in the bush. |

Id rather suffer with a guy like Chris Butler for a couple of seasons than pay out the ass to have a decent guy for 6 at 5 mill - jak521
Particularly when you have younger players coming through the system who might be able to help out in 1-2 years.

And you can say with 100% certainty that we'd be able to sign one of them? That they'd want to sign here for the $$ we'd offer over other teams trying to scoop them up? |

Once it shakes out I think we will see that AMac's deal isn't too bad in comparison to what other comparable UFAs get.
But that doesn't mean they couldn't have waited.

Yep. Far different off season, though. Heading into a lockout with a great deal of uncertainty, teams were locking up pending free agents left and right because nobody knew for sure what was on the horizon.
The best UFA Dmen were Sutter, Carle, Wideman & Kuba. |

I think it was a calculated risk. If you go into negotiations with other players AMAC is listening to offers from other teams. My guess is that he's good in the locker room, steady and happy to be in Philly and no longer in NYI. They made him a strong offer for long term and he took it. He probably could have gotten more in UFA. And the Flyers could have gotten someone possibly cheaper in FA (we won't know until tomorrow). That said that person might also be an unknown. No NTC so we can move him later if needed. I realize we are tight to the cap but there isn't anyone in the FA pool who has me drooling either.
I guess the way I see it they could have made a few better deals (possibly) and a bunch of worse ones (definate). |

Nope. But then we'd also have an extra $5mm in cap space to make a trade. |

I dont think anyone liked the Carle signing in Tampa I know most Flyer fans were glad we didnt pay that. Also Jagr got a pretty big raise as well that season. Crazy to think the guy is still playing at a pretty high level at his age. |
