Nope. But then we'd also have an extra $5mm in cap space to make a trade.
- Jsaquella

So we're using one asset (cap space) and not losing another (players/picks).

Again, I'm not saying I'm a huge fan of the deal, but they went with the sure thing and they could have done much worse (see: Randy Jones, the entire 06/07 season, Rathje, etc).

I think it was a calculated risk. If you go into negotiations with other players AMAC is listening to offers from other teams. My guess is that he's good in the locker room, steady and happy to be in Philly and no longer in NYI. They made him a strong offer for long term and he took it. He probably could have gotten more in UFA. And the Flyers could have gotten someone possibly cheaper in FA (we won't know until tomorrow). That said that person might also be an unknown. No NTC so we can move him later if needed. I realize we are tight to the cap but there isn't anyone in the FA pool who has me drooling either.

I guess the way I see it they could have made a few better deals (possibly) and a bunch of worse ones (definate).

- FlyersGrace

Sure it's a calculated risk. Either approach is. the difference is the Flyers set the market with the Amac deal. Maybe if another shoe drops first, the market isn't as pricey. Maybe it's even more expensive.

Me, I would have waited. It's not as if they were risking losing Bobby (frank)ing Orr

I dont think anyone liked the Carle signing in Tampa I know most Flyer fans were glad we didnt pay that. Also Jagr got a pretty big raise as well that season. Crazy to think the guy is still playing at a pretty high level at his age.

The Flyers haven't met with a single free agent according to Hextall. Hextall says that dealing with the cap issues with the roster as currently constructed is his number one priority.

To me that sounds like a pretty strong indication that they will not meet with free agents with the cap picture as it is.

In the past you have said that the salary cap is not an issue for the Flyers and in this post you say it will always be an issue for teams like the Flyers. Would you please clarify which one is your current stance?

Can Hextall play a shell game with a few of the contracts to sign free agents? Yes. Should he? Probably not. Hextall, at least in his quotes so far, agrees with me.

- Flyers_01

You're all over the map and are just taking comments made out of context, and applying your own definitive value to it. Nothing Hextall has said indicates that they won't delve into free agency when the period opens tomorrow.

I've said a lot of things about the cap, and I've been right about it. Just like I am now. I know the numbers and what they Flyers can do.

Whether they should or not is taking the discussion to a different area.

Hextall hasn't agreed with you or said what they will or won't do as far as free agency is concerned. The shell game he is playing is with his comments.

Orr and AMac are basically the same player. Both humans, they can both skate, and they both play in the NHL. I mean, what more is there really?

OH NO, we would have lost MacDonald!! then we would have had to sign one of the other 5 or 6 guys out there who were similar.
- Jsaquella

They're similar in your eyes. Are they similar in the Flyers eyes?

I'm just saying that had they waited, I feel there's a really good chance that they would have been able to find a better deal, or at the very least managed to make the same exact deal they did with MacDonald.

I agree Im very excited about the direction that Hexy seems to be taking this orginization. Very excited and optimistic about the D prospects we have in our system. It's just that the same old tired arguments over and over again about how someone's overpaid, cap problems, CORSI, ect is gratting on my sanity. It's not just here but everywhere. I wish people would just sit back for a second and enjoy the ride instead of constantly stressing and whining over crap that they have no control over.
- JonnyHammerstix

we have no control over ANYTHING they do. so......all of this is just a huge waste of time.

I'm not disagreeing at all. But they decided to cut the uncertainty out and take what they had in hand. I don't think there's a right or wrong, even if you're not a fan of it.

At least they held.the line on Brayden Schenn on the bridge deal. I don't know who they'll move to get some room, but I think somebody's going and soon

I see both sides as well. My issue is, that once you commit, it shuts down all other options.

I am saying if they waited they might be in worse. MacDonald didn't set the market price for Dman. Its a market that continully increases because he lack of talent and NHL dman.
