Could be worse. I'd rather them have drafted this kid then Derek Mathers. Or Garrett Klotz. Or Tyrell Goulbourne. etc etc etc. - TheGreat28
I still am confused with the Goulbourne pick in round 3 last year??? |

Why not shoot to be one of those teams without holes in the lineup and has 6M in cap space left over? - Tomahawk
I'd be fine with that. How do you think the Flyers could do that? |

That is a statement/opinion that is not shared by many others..... - landros 2
It is shared by plenty of people who understand the cap and the principles behind it. And understand the Flyers cap philosophy. |

So are most of us, given the other kids on the draft board at the time. |

agreed....Holmgren"s signing of Macdonald is not even close to the worst move he's made.....In fact, I like Macdonald.....He may be slightly overpaid, but he makes the backend better. He's still fairly young and in my view is a very good two way d man. - landros 2
nothing like a better backend |

1. Get Paul Howard Holmgren out of hockey ops. |

The Flyers manage the cap so well they're trying to give away a guy they deemed worthy of a 5 year $22.5mm commitment just twelve months ago.

We don't know how well Hexy will do. He might very well be as big a spender as Holmgren was. |

even though Hexy is the GM, I still feel Homer is in control and why is Bob Clarke still involved with the team? |

Its pretty obvious stevie Y is going after a big UFA fish, with all that salary dumping. My money is on niskanen. |

He might. But so far, he's shown he's not afraid to trade a fan favorite to create cap room for future years and has told Vinny's agent to feel free to seek trades. I don't have a problem with long-term deals as long as there's a plan in place for the player. Vinny was a shiny toy that had no spot on the team. Let's give him a season or so before we immediately deem him a horrible GM who can't manage a team/cap. |

You've made enumerous posts including on this thread of why the Flyers should move Lecavalier. Not once has it included because they mismanaged the Cap. The reasons being given have ranged from not playing well, declining, to not fitting into Berube's system of play. So which is it, are the moving him because of those reasons, or because they've mismanaged the cap? And were they mismanaging the cap last season when they had the cap space to sign Lecavalier? And if Lecavalier had played well last year and fit in well, and had not been injured, would they still be trying to give him away? So what are the reasons why the Flyers are looking to move Lecavalier? |

If we are unable to make that " big type of Homer deal", which I doubt Hectall will do.
I hope he just makes a few adjustments via UFA by adding a Pouliot, B, Boyle, or even take a look at Leo Komarov.
These 3 could all be affordable. |

The real problem with this situation was not dealing with the coach on extremely thin ice before his plans influenced free agent signings. |

If they get Niskanen at, let's say, $7M, that gives them less than $2M to fill out 2-3 forward slots and a backup goalie spot. They're not in all that great of a spot to do something like this. |

Interesting stuff
This is not an easy process for the Flyers, throwing away good money after bad, after spending many months auditing their recent hockey-operations spending. Yet, with a smaller-than-planned cap, eating a portion of a contract will be a necessity for the Flyers this summer. It's just a matter of who and when.

Lecavalier had a spot on the team when he was signed. I think part of it was they felt that Hartnell was going to decline, combined with the penalties, and how Berube wants to play, all came into play for the Hartnell deal. |

I think he was more of an insurance policy if B Schenn couldn't hang at center who had a great camp and earned the spot. I don't think the Flyers had ever used Schenn at wing prior to last year. |

The Flyers cap situation is manageable, but they're already over the $69mm cap for next season and have to sign a back up goalie at the very least. That means they have to make a move. |
