I think the thing is that, right now, Vinny and Grossmann are on the roster. And other teams know they are in cap trouble, which limits their ability to make a trade with any leverage for a good return (unless they include extra assets or absorb partial salaries). If they further complicate things by signing players to large contracts, then they are REQUIRED to move out other contracts, which basically lets every other GM know that they can give up next to nothing for those players. That is why they should not go after a player like Ehrhoff, who's going to drive a bidding war. - jmatchett383
My opinion, I wouldn't let any of that stop me from going after Ehrhoff. It's a risk I know, but a lot of teams are in the same boat.

Schroeder, Dalpe, Galiardi, White, Loktionov, Bowman all not qualified. Conacher and Perreault still not qualified as of this writing.
On D, Ellerby, McBain, Del Zotto, Aulie, Cuma, Falk.
Some interesting young depth options. Nothing really jumps out at me other then maybe McBain/Del Zotto and Conacher/Perreault.
Perreault is a very, very interesting player. Incredibly productive. Don't know why ANA wouldn't qualify him. |

I see. So it's not against the cap, just reduces the 10% overage they are allotted in the offseason? - funmaster18
Basically the gist of it. He won't count against the in season cap. The reason for giving him a qualifying offer is to retain his rights.

I wouldn't, because then teams might tell you, "Sure, we'll take Grossmann for a 6th...if you throw in Simmonds," and other things of that nature. You're tying your hands even more than they already are. |

Significantly less than 2.9M - aflyerpower8
It'll have to be to sign him as a 7th defenseman.

Leafs don't intend to publicly release which RFAs received qualifying offers. So we wait for it to leak out somehow…

Yep. Heeter was the lone guy in this group that they were supposedly wavering on |

Too much $ to qualify him... they have an offer on the table for him, but he looks like he's going UFA.
Lot of pretty highly picked ex-prospects not getting qualified... I don't recall it ever being like this on June 30. |

I understand your point, but I think that's an extreme. If the Flyers wanted to deal Grossmann, it wouldn't be that hard to find a deal.

I agree with all that except not trying to better your team with Ehrhoff.
Hextall would possibly send Vinny for free of void his contract if that was possible.
Not upgrading your team for the reason of not getting a good return for a player you don't want doesn't sound like a good reason to me.
It sucks and we do not have leverage. Even without acquiring Ehrhoff other GMs already know that. That's just the reality of our cap situation. Getting a better player and losing a trade return for Vinny or whatever is a win for the team and the future in my book.

Just added Loktionov, Aulie, and Bowman to that list as well. Lots of cheap depth guys. |

No, but it would limit the return they'd get even more than it would be right now. If they're gonna do that, I'd prefer they trade him before the start of UFA period and then go in guns blazing. |

I had thought his going to the KHL marked the end for gusty as a flyer. He's already a bubble guy as it was, I thought. Now with all these d prospects getting closer, some on the smaller size too.. |

At 2.9M for one year, he was worth less than a 7th round pick, so I would say he could be obtained for pretty cheap. |

He had 18 goals and 43 points. Anaheim expects to get him for less then 1.05M?

The thing is, many people on here don't think we can simply void VL via trade. It's that we'll have to send additional assets (2nd/3rd round pick) with him and even then we'd have to take a salary back and retain part of his. If we get into serious cap hell, who knows what kind of compensation we'll have to include for someone to take him off our hands. |

Who knows if he'll ever play for the Flyers again. But they retained his rights by qualifying him. That's the purpose of doing it. |

So what happens if they go up against the cap ceiling and he decides to accept the QO in, say, mid-December? |

Exactly my point. His point's per/60 is off the charts. Him not getting a qualifying offer to me is just nutty. |
