The Flyers cap situation is manageable, but they're already over the $69mm cap for next season and have to sign a back up goalie at the very least. That means they have to make a move.

But we've all known this (to an extent) since May. Not like it's new.

Interesting stuff

This is not an easy process for the Flyers, throwing away good money after bad, after spending many months auditing their recent hockey-operations spending. Yet, with a smaller-than-planned cap, eating a portion of a contract will be a necessity for the Flyers this summer. It's just a matter of who and when.

- Jsaquella

I wonder if this audit occurs every year, or just those years when a Comcast wonk moves in and assumes Peter Luukko's old job.

Luke Schenn anyone?

Only if you can get a much better deal than moving Grossmann and/or Vinny.

Edit: Actually, he was one of our best players down the stretch/in the playoffs. I'd be very hesitant to move him.

The only move they have to make is to place Pronger on LTIR, and do the maneuvering with that. That gives them 4.7M to work with.

I think he was more of an insurance policy if B Schenn couldn't hang at center who had a great camp and earned the spot. I don't think the Flyers had ever used Schenn at wing prior to last year.
- jmatchett383

Had Schenn played wing, with Vinny at Center, it made sense. Schenn had played LW with Briere, and that was the logical assumption.

Unfortunately, Vinny didn't play well at center or wing, doesn't fit the new coach or GM's plans and his overall play is in decline.

That should be enough to not have to mention the cap implications, but they're a factor, too

But don't they have to be cap compliant with him on the roster opening night? Even with the 10% overage, that's a lot of salary to hide.

It is shared by plenty of people who understand the cap and the principles behind it. And understand the Flyers cap philosophy.
- MJL

No actually many people outside of Philly who know plenty and understand just fine, maybe even as much as you ..... think the Flyers have mishandled the cap with poor signings with bad terms on many deals.

everyone can agree the Flyers are a cap team, but that shouldn't be confused with poor decisions...Hockey people get that.

I think Luke Schenn looked pretty good in the playoffs. No idea what his possession numbers looked like, but I don't remember him being a disaster.

True, but they also expected to have another $1-2mm to work with this season. Hextall stated that the cap was lower than their projections. Another $1-2mm and they're under the upper limit with room to add a cheap back up goalie, before Pronger's LTIR kicks in

Signing Free agents that didn't work out is not mishandling the cap. That's just not choosing the right players. The Flyers have also made a lot of the right choices. Why isn't that considered handling the cap well?

There is a combination of problems. Cap management is absolutely one of them. Has been for years. Now, under Hexy its hard to know if they will continue or not, but I would like to think he puts more stock in cap management than others before him.

There is another option that has been bought to my attention. And that is to max out the roster with the right players to be 4.9M over the 69M at the end of training camp. But it just has to include a couple of players equal to about 1M that they can immeidately demote to create injury cap space for the season.

I understand your theory here but didnt Brayden Schenn play at least 60 games at center last year? He didnt do all that much better than Vinny did. Couts will play the same role no matter what. So I'm not seeing much of a positive this season. Only cap relief in the following seasons. Holmgren really put Hextall in a bad spot. I mean what was Holmgren thinking was gonna happen the following season?? Did he just go for broke cause his foot was already half way out the door?

The only way I see this team getting better is if Hextall starts making moves like that crafty Stevie Y in Tampa. Now that guy knows how to dump cap. Scrap this defense a little. Bring a kid up. I honestly can see Ghost making the team. I know Ed Snider wants him too. lol

I would actually like to see Couturier as second line center with reduced time on the PK and Schenn as a winger for the year but that's just my personal opinion.

They could also start Laughton in the AHL this year at the start of the season like they did with Schenn a couple years back. (assuming he makes the team)

I personally disagree that the Flyers cap management has been a problem. Some might not agree with thier philosophy, but that doesn't make it mismanagement. Every year they put a quality roster on the ice for the season. And also have the space to make free agent offers to players such as Weber, Suter, Parise, Bryzgalov, Lecavalier, etc. A couple of those players weren't the right choices, but that's a player personell issue more then mismanagement of the cap. Also drafting issues have come into play, forcing the Flyers to have to spend more in some areas to shore up weaknesses. That again, is not cap mismanagement.

You've made enumerous posts including on this thread of why the Flyers should move Lecavalier. Not once has it included because they mismanaged the Cap. The reasons being given have ranged from not playing well, declining, to not fitting into Berube's system of play. So which is it, are the moving him because of those reasons, or because they've mismanaged the cap? And were they mismanaging the cap last season when they had the cap space to sign Lecavalier? And if Lecavalier had played well last year and fit in well, and had not been injured, would they still be trying to give him away? So what are the reasons why the Flyers are looking to move Lecavalier?
- MJL

I'd like to know what system vinny fits in in this league. Is there any system out there that doesn't put a premium on skating?

Vinny is an immovable piece right now. Flyers have to deal with it. Bad signing.
It was an even worse move when they gave lava 3 games with him.

Not at this point. I think they can move Grossmann or another depth piece, replace it with a similar or slightly lesser player making less cash and then exploit the Pronger LTIR in the summer.

They could also max out Pronger's LTIR this summer, start the season $4.9mm over the cap and use Pronger's LTIR benefits from the get go.

It's certainly doable, but it's also pushing the envelope.

They have to start using Couturier in more favorable situations and matchups at ES also. taking less penalties as a team would be a good way to do that.

More than 10 teams have expressed interest in Matt Niskanen. The plan is to cut that list down today.
