The cap hit that hangs over the club every year. It just seems dumb that they have to carry that indefinitely, but if there isn't a "fair" way of clearing it off the books, it opens up the system to abuse of the salary cap. - magmoo
We thought the new CBA would allow teams move players like Pronger off the books because they clearly aren't capable of playing. If we were the Devils, they would have made that exception. |

You said they should be penalized like the Devils? For what? There is no abuse of the salary cap here. |

I'd rather move Streit, and sign Erhoff than sign Grossmann. In fact, if Alt is playing well for the Phantoms by mid season, I'd think about moving AMac for some more scoring on the wing and/or a decent draft pick and go with:
Coburn-Erhoff
Timonen-Schenn
Grossmann-Alt - BiggE
I agree with the first suggestion. But the latter replaceing MacDonald with Alt is a pretty bad idea. Alt many never become an NHL regular, and if he does break in, he'll need to be sheltered, and used correctly to get his feet right. We complain that the Flyers defense isn't good enough and then want to trade one of the better defenseman on the team for offensive help. |

No I doubt they would've. Not being capable of playing again, really has nothing to do with how LTIR works. |

But it's not abuse. They signed a deal per the rules knowing (possibly) full well what the possible ramifications were, and now that he's permanently injured, they're playing by the rules again. Similar situation to Marc Savard in Boston. - jmatchett383
I agree and I'm not saying the Flyers are circumventing the cap at all. The intent of the rule was to prevent teams from signing veterans for term longer than reasonable given their age. So it wasn't the case with Pronger/Savard, but their teams are still dealing with the liability....how does the league free the teams without setting the precedent that moving an older player to LTIR can be used to avoid the intended rule?
Medical opinion is not something that rules handle well. |

My mom used to be a biochemist. She couldn't understand why science didn't come easy to me like it did for her. She'd 'help' me study. |

35 or not, it's in the player's best interests to not retire while signed to a contract. LTIR due to retirement and the over-35 rule are separate issues that just happen to be connected in this case. |

Pronger's injury was more of a fluke though. He suffered the concussion from taking a stick to the eye. It was a cumulative effect like Savard.
There really is no way to fix it. I was hoping they'd wipe the slate clean for both teams. It was fairly obvious that both players weren't faking. They were both still playing at a very high level prior to the injury. |
