I think it's a bit of both. Being right to the cap never stopped Holmgren so we know it's possible. That said I do think Hextall has a different philosophy.

LA hasn't signed an NHL player on July 1 under Lombardi. Only signing on the first day of FA in the DL era was Jeff Schultz last year (7/5).

They are out of "outs" to alleviate themselves of bad contracts.

The chickens have come home to roost a bit.

That said, standing pat is not the worst idea in the world for this franchise right now.

Why not? With current cap space, no. But what's to stop them from trading any number of their 10+ players without NMC/NTC? Wouldn't be the first time something drastic. Voracek alone would clear up 4.25mil... Read - 3.6mil... Amac - 5mil... Mason -4.1

Now reality says they wouldn't and shouldn't do anything stupid like that. But I wouldn't say never... especially with the Flyers.
