I'd be straight-pissed, because there's no way anyone with eyes should be trying to justify that contract
If Orpik was a Flyer under that deal, I'd be hard-pressed to think of a single good thing to say about him as a player at this point in his career - AllInForFlyers
no. i wanted orpik to move on so maybe they FINALLY have to give despres a shot.
but even from a new teams perspective, looking for that rugged guy, i dont see how you offer more than what scuderi got last year. and even that is a big stretch.
that orpik deal is one of the worst things i can remember. |

Former Lighting/Flame. Can play center and wing. Decent size from what I can remember, and VERY defensively sound.
Probably our 4th line center for next year if I had to guess. Don't let the 2 way deal fool you, this guy is as good a 4th liner as you can ask for.
Basically a better version of Adam Hall. |

I think Orpik is a solid defenseman. And he's going to help Washington. It just shows the value that available good defenseman have around the league.

Yeah, he is now -- after winning one Cup with you and another in Los Angeles - AllInForFlyers
your original point is well taken.
i still think a move is in the flyers best interest. but it has to be the right move.
and really, other than MAYBE niskanen at his deal today, the right move really doesnt seem to be out there really. and its better to make no moves at all than make the wrong one that could potentially prevent you from being able to capture the right one should it finally come along. |

I don't believe that the Flyers have to wait for those players. In fact I think waiting for them would be foolish. I think you can try to win, and develop players at the same time. It's an ongoing process. The Flyers just have to make smart moves and the right moves when they present themselves. Because none of those players are a guarantee. - MJL
"Waiting for them would be foolish?"
Man, do you have to be a contrarian every single minute of every single day?
It's not foolish to wait for them -- that's the whole point of drafting and developing players! Of course you can try to win -- but you'd better be developing your own players

He's played 50 games the last 3 seasons. Why so few? Is he injury prone?
Ummmm.... Yeah he's never played more than 22 games in a season before. Not an NHL regular. |

His hockey sense is poor. He tries hard, gives the effort, but he just doesn't think the game well.

this might be where you and i disagree for the first time.
not on the last part. good defensemen do have value. but i think orpiks time as being a good defenseman in this league is pretty much over. and there are no sour grapes about him being gone whatsoever. good for him that he got paid like that. i wanted him to move on regardless. he may provide a decent presence on a bottom pairing, but unless his partner can really cover for him, he is going to have some major problems.
and whatever good he does provide the team will be more than canceled out by the weight of that deal. so overall, i dont think his signing helps washington. |

Hexy just said it on media conference call. Also said team would like to add a veteran depth D as well.

What does waiting for them mean? It is foolish to wait 3-5 years for players to develop to the point where they can play a significant role on the team, as top defenseman. Because they may never get there. My point is that you can do both. You can try to win now smartly, and develop players for the future. That's what the best teams do. You don't put winning now on hold and pass up moves to make the team better now to wait for players. You also don't completely abandon the future, as the Flyers have been guilty of in the past. There is a middle ground. The Flyers are not, and should not put themselves in a 3-5 year holding pattern.

You watched Orpik on a team last year that was dysfunctional defensively. That exposes defenseman. Not sure that Orpik is going to a better situation in Washington in that regard. But he'll help them in certain roles and situations for sure. Can still play in defensive situations and on the PK. And they have a new Coach in Barry Trotz. |

FIXED.
Hextall probably spent majority of the day looking for someone to take VL's corpse, in the mean time players who could have helped this team signed with other teams. |
