You really think Grabovski wants to take that much of a discount below $5 million/yr he was just earning. He might take a one year prove it contract, or could even bolt for the KHL - ravishingone
a one year prove it contract comes at a value for the team giving it though. |

i didn't see that. i've been skimming all day. i think hextall is going to prove to be quite shrewd. he'll make mistakes, but i have a lot of faith in him. he won't just give him away. if he can't find the right deal, he'll keep him and roll with it. he's essentially said that already. and i'm fine with that. i'm willing to give him another year and hopefully he stays healthy. - hammarby31
I have a lot of faith in Hextall thus far. I like what he has done and how he has approached putting his mark on the team. I really liked his draft class and his apparent ideas on team building.
I think that if he can't make an acceptable deal for Vinny, then Vinny will remain a Flyer. If he was willing to eat a lot of salary or trade a high pick, I think Vinny would be gone by now. |

Absolutely not. Said that from the get go. You have to draw a line at some point. My very first post on the topic said that. Somehow it's been missed. - Jsaquella
If I even thought Vinny could be net neutral, even if you bent over backwards to shelter him...I'd take it. In the games where he played well, you can see that he is/was a lethal goal scorer. He knows exactly where to go and what to do when he gets there. He sees those scoring opportunities.
You don't have to be the fastest skater. You don't have to be a positive possession player. The problem with Vinny is that if you aren't strong defensively, at this time...we can't hide him enough because we have a young team with some forwards who can go cold offensively, so we have to win games by making fewer mistakes, at times.
Believe it or not, I do think there are teams out there where Vinny could be net neutral and look fairly decent.
We just don't have that kind of roster, right now. Which is too bad, because sometimes, you do need a straight-up offensive player who can do what he does. |

I think with careful planning, he could be net neutral, sure.
Get him a line where he has a winger that can lug the puck, a big dude who can bang home rebounds and just let him be the shooter on the line and keep them away from bad matchups and he'd be fine. |

His draft picks were promising two-way defenders with speed, a two-way winger who plays center and has lots of speed, a far faller who was at one point prjected to go first round (picked in the 5th), and an incredibly hard worker. His FA signings have been a cheap but good and good team fit backup goalie, and two two-way forwards with speed. His single trade acquired a pick and a two-way player with speed. See the pattern? Cause I like it. It's a damn fine pattern. |

Agreed. I do have a lot of respect for Hextall not throwing away assets to get rid of Vinnie's contract. |

Personally, I like the idea of him on a line with Read and Simmonds. Move B. Schenn to the top line. |

That winger who carries it would have to be a hell of a passer and have good speed...off the top of my head, I think Vinny would probably look pretty decent with Ales Hemsky, Phil Kessel and even Jake Voracek.
It might have to be that Berube has to give Giroux different wingers this year and see if Voracek can get Schenn or Lecavalier to raise their games, because while it did look like he tried everything last year, actually, he didn't. For good reason; Giroux was killing it over the last four months and we needed every single point we could get.
But if it were me...I'd risk splitting Voracek from Giroux for a few weeks and see what happens

Agreed wholeheartedly.
When I try to come up with combos, I find myself splitting 28 & 93 more than 3/4ths of the time. I think you get two dynamic lines that can generate chances like a bastard that way and really give offensive opportunities to more guys.
If Schenn is playing center, I want him to play with Jake.

I just like the approach. He's clearly got a plan and he's trying to implement it. Every move has been made thus far to get better skating players, either on defense or up front, who can play a two way game.

I believed it with Couturier last year and believe it with Schenn now: You've invested time with these players. You owe it to them, and yourself, to give them wingers that allow them to maximize their potential.
I think Umberger's gonna wind up playing with Couturier and I think that will help them both -- Couturier's good enough where he just needs wingers who aren't killing him. The better the wingers you give him, the more I think -- repeat think -- he will produce.
With Schenn, I already know -- I've seen it enough. He's not flashy or extremely fast or extremely skilled. He reminds me a lot of how Daymond Langkow was, though Langkow was a better passer.
But if you put Schenn with just one dynamic winger, he will score. It's unfortunate that he's not, say...Peter Forsberg. But Schenn can be better at center, and impactful in games, with the right kind of wingers.
