If they dont add a top 6 forward I'll be puzzled on this move. If you want to roll with the kids then Miller makes no sense. If you want to make the playoffs then they need scoring now.
We'll see what happens by season opener. If scoring is next season's agenda, then again, Miller makes no sense this season. Miller only makes sense if they can compete in this division this season. We traded away too much offense for this to happen without a top 6 forward and probably a D who shoots from the point on the PP.
This was hardly a PR move to sell tickets. Even Chompsey finally figured out this summer that the Canucks in fact do need scoring. If he was bipolar like the rest of us, he would have seen it coming. Don't worry Chompsey. Every class has a kid like you.
Lack will want out before the end of Miller's contract if it isnt traded inside of the 3 years. There could be a repeat of Schneider/Lu... - boonerbuck

Can I just reiterate how pissed off I am (still) about this whole Miller thing?
@#$#@ me. - Zogg
I'm trying to look at the bright side of it; at least Benning et al. are being proactive about addressing issues with the team instead of band aiding holes with stop-gap make work projects like Gillis did.
Do I like the Miller signing?
Would I rather that they signed, say Hiller?
At least they went out and signed one of the top UFA goalies on the market. It can't get any worse than year, can it?
Disclaimer: have been drinking heavily since this afternoon. |

Miller is a very expensive stop gap. He's going to be old at the end of this contract. Lack will be 30 and in his prime but likely wanting the (frank) out of Dodge before then.
I don't even see how they can keep Markstrom in the mix. He or Lack may actually be the one's traded. Maybe they plan on heaping the future hopes on Markstrom instead and getting assets for Lack. Still trying to get a read on this.... |

Exactly, over two month until the pre season starts. There are a few team that need to shed some salary and hopefully we can take advantage of that; a lot can happen between now and then. |

I'm pretty the miller signing was more ownership then linden Benning. Wants us to compete. As long as aquilini owns the nucks you will never see a full rebuild |

Interesting day.
Soooooooo glad I didn't renew my season tickets. Considering how good mediocre western conference teams got today, it's going to be a tough season to watch.

I think a lot of Canucks fans are overrating Eddie Lack. |

According to sources, #Isles were more than competitive with offers to targeted FAs: Offered 3 years to Dan Boyle, 4 years to Jarome Iginla.

Garth Snow should be Executive of the year, every year, for getting Tavares to sign there, and somehow keeping him happy enough to not demand a trade |

Yes, I'm sure teams will be dumping their #1 centers. We just have to be patient. |

I can see that. Maybe they should trade him. I was saying last season he isnt a proven #1 yet but most didn't think that way. If management were confident and planning on keeping Lack, quite possibly we would see someone he could compete with here but that's the farthest from the situation now. Why would they do that if he was the future? Lack is not a youngster...
By trading Lack, they can Develop Markstrom in the NHL. That's definitely an option...

I thought about it for a bit and considering what some of these ayers signed for today , there's no way Benning could have fit them into our cap structure. We have approx 5 mill left after signing our RFA's. If we blow our load on a UFA, were at the cap; no more flexibility. |

You'd have to pay a serious price if you want to get Kane. - LeftCoaster
I wouldn't give two craps if it takes something like this:
Lack, Tanev, Gaunce, 2016 1st, 2015 3rd.
For
Kane + low ceiling prospect plus a low pick |

They'll build his value next season and trade him next offseason when his value is at it's highest. That extra year will allow Eriksson and Markstrom time to be groomed into a back-up role. |

I don't think flexibility matters. As it stands, the canucks are not going to be competitive this year. We'll be stuck close to the bottom of the conference. Picking 6th or 7th in next year's draft.
Flexibility would infer money to spend at the deadline. What could possibly happen at the trade deadline that would make the canucks competitive? Cap flexibility will be important in the 2016-2017 season.

"build his value" as a 27yr old backup who was deemed a lesser option/6x's less valuable cap wise than the past-his-prime-vet who was brought in to replace him? Uhmmm, odd approach... |

As we get closer to the season, and teams are determining what they have and what they have to do to be cap compliant, Benning could use it to land a player who might be available.
I'm not saying he had to spend it now, but having it is a luxury. |

They wanted more depth and experience at the position, so they went out and got it. Some people might see value in his "6x less valuable cap" hit, and be willing to trade for him. I think if he posts solid numbers they trade him before he hits the UFA market.
They can build his value by having him play low scoring teams. Thus, hopefully, inflating his numbers.
You see it as an odd approach, I see it as giving your team the best chance to win. They do that, but having so much depth allows you to explore every option to improve your team. For all we know, no one wants to sign here, so we have to trade for us to acquire our needs. You can trade for solid players if you have "extra" assets at certain positions. In our case that would be at D and in net.
Edit* this is the same guy who drafted Miller AAAAND traded for Tukka Rask man, I have faith in his ability to judge goaltenders. Quite frankly, that's why I'm stoked about Demko. |
