I would much rather sign Setoguchi since his skating is way better than Heatley's.
Let's get quicker, not slower. |

I'm thinking Setoguchi but money will be a decision maker, how much would your upper limit for a contract for Heatley be? |

I still think the easiest solution is to move Grossman. Put B. Schenn on the LW on the first line and let Vinny play as the 2nd line center.
After you LTIR Pronger you can get the leftovers on defense to be the #7. Someone from the Phantoms to be the 6th defenseman to start the season. Make a trade later in the season to upgrade if you are able. |

There won't be much reward. He is clearly trending downward over the last 4 years. He is what he is.
I really dont want Ott but I feel like it's going to happen. Berube has been preaching possession and at least Ott can win faceoffs. |

I agree. Also think Flyers fans' opinions on Ott would change if he was in orange and black (although he's coming off a poor season). - bmeltzer
I just don't see how a guy who has been up around 150 PIMs almost every season of his career is what the Flyers need as the 3rd line center. I was hoping that swapping Hartnell for Umberger was the start of a concerted effort to become more disciplined as a team.
The Flyers led the league in PK time last season, and were 28th in PP time minus PK time.

I think Setagutchi could play with Giroux. He was a good finisher in SJ. I think playing on the top line he would get plenty of chances. |

I agree. If they move Vinny why not just use Umberger as the 3rd line center and give Couturier more offensive minutes. Then they could allocate the money to an upgrade on D or wing.

I'm with you on this. Just reversing that trend would help the team immensely, especially considering over the grind of the entire season. Let's play some easier minutes over the season yea? |

I understd the hate for Ott but i almost compare him to Raffi Torres. These guys are dispised and yet teams going into the playoffs loves these guys. These are guys that winning teams love to have as the have an attitude that can carry a club in a game whne maybe they don't have their best stuff.
That being said it depends on cost if I would be happy to have Ott or not. |

And what if none of the defenseman are ready for the NHL as of now, let alone take on the minutes and role of Grossmann. So they've moved Grossmann for what reason? Did it make the team better?

If he got something similar to what we gave Talbot I would be ok with that. Anything over $2mil or two years is too much to me. |

Agee. I was hoping they would go after Pouliot but he got a lot of coin. Setagutchi could do very well with Giroux.
We lost some " edge" in Hartnell that I would like replaced. Ott could replace the edge but at what price? |

Yeah. That is why I said depending on cost. Ott can do a lot of good things. Same as Torres. He could be a nice peice with Couturer and Read as they shutdown the top lines and alos create offense. Look at what Downie did when Healthy. That line coause problems for other teams. |

If two people have a 100 dollars to spend in a store. One guy goes in and picks out all that he wants to buy, and spends 98 dollars.
The other guy goes in, picks out all he wants to buy, and only spends 88 dollars. The guy who spent 98 dollars mismanaged his money? Or did he just already spend most of his allotment. And has less to spend the next time he goes in the store?
This idea that because the Flyers don't have a ton of cap space, means that they mismanaged the cap, is false.

Some are choosing to spin this as a blessing. I'd rather have the cap room and make the intellegent, informed decision not to get caught up in this player or that player. Instead we really couldnt get involved in much at all.
And yes, we have the overage to spend just under 5mil. But if you signed a player and then couldn't move Vinny now you're forced to dump a Matt Read or combination of players to regain that cap room. And that has to be in the back of the Flyers head. |

Yes they did make the team better. They keep Vinny and use him appropriately. He would have at least 25 goals. Then you trade him next offseason for actual assets. You could use the leftover money from the Grossman deal ($2.26mil) to sign a MDZ or another D-man to start the year if you are not comfortable with any of the Phantoms. That would assume you moved Grossman for a draft pick. You could also move him for a cheaper option at D.
Moving Vinny and taking back salary or including a pick is not appealing to me considering Vinny can still play if used properly. |

If we keep him slot him as the third line center between Umberger and Raffl and make the best of it. |

I agree. Couturier still plays more minutes. I believe Vinny has more to offer and is tougher to replace at center than Grossman is at D. |

I think "losing edge" means whenever Hartnell went crashing into our own goalies... numerous times a game.
Right?
IMO, Simmonds more than replaces Hartnell's role. He's a leader, he's smarter on the ice, and he still has grit... |

And if the kid from the Phantoms that has been plugged into the lineup is overwhelmed, and the Coaching staff has to limit his minutes, and other teams take advantage of that player. And it's a downgrade defensively from Grossmann. Using Lecavalier properly is going to cancel that out? I doubt it.
There is no reason to move Grossmann. They don't have to do that to keep Lecavalier. |
