He took the ability for Lack to compete for #1 away tho... so he is doing the opposite as well...
- boonerbuck

I'm ok with that given his 41 games NHL experience, I was more speaking towards the forwards - but yes you're right.

That's the thing. What precisely are we trying to achieve? with the Miller signing (by the way, I'm really not quite sure if I've said this in the past, so please kindly bear with me, but I'm not a fan of the deal ) and now Vrbata. Are we supposed to be competitive? are we simply re-tooling? or are we semi-re-tooling? or are we in semi-re-tooling with a pinch of full rebuild?

Edit: achh, Bloated already expanded on this, my bad

- Zogg

Obviously making the playoffs and providing some entertaining hockey is the goal. You make the playoffs and you never know what can happen. Minnesota took down Colorado and Dallas gave Anaheim a run for their money in the first round.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - losing is for losers. If you're not trying to win you should (frank) off and pick another line of work. Just my opinion.

They better get a butt load for Tanev, Burrows, Higgins, & Hansen

Edit: forgot Lack

Sounds like a package deal to me.

They've said all along their plan was to move out some bodies but retool on the fly, and that's what they're doing.

There are now 23 forwards on this team. Most on one way contracts (or at least have to clear waivers to be sent down). A team full of 3rd and 4th liners. Obviously, something has to give.

I'm tired of mediocrity. The moves this week will ensure that this team (once again) achieves mediocrity.

Losing without even trying to win is even worse.

Bonino and Vrbata are both decent shootout players. #8thPlaceorBust

Im ok with this signing for 2 years. I doubt he makes it past the deadline in his final year. He'll bring in a pick of some sort. When they do the same with Miller, it will be a 1st prolly. These guys will contribute to the youth movement that way. Only Gillis and Nonis let players walk for nothing when your playoff hopes are meager...

At this point I'd be all right even if the Canucks didn't make the play-offs but nonetheless played an exciting brand of hockey.

But I understand and agree with your stance. If you're not trying to put forth your best effort to succeed, then you are in the wrong business, indeed.

They've drafted some really great young players the past two years. Kopitar wasn't labeled a super-star when he was drafted, neither was Toews or Patrice Bergeron - have some faith for cryin out loud.

I think he was. It was the threat of him playing his career in Russia that had him fall in the draft. He was ranked top 3 earlier in that year at some point...

Good call, Bezz, I think we need to pace ourselves here in case of any other dubious transactions

Not a bad signing at all - a little high but he's put up some good numbers with not so good players in Phoenix.

On the plus side, it could have been worse, say 4.2 mil for Kulemin.

Do you no think they're trying to win games? They've got some good veteran players on this team who still have some game left. They're also getting younger with good players like Bonino, I don't know, I just don't get so torn up about these transition years.

In three years this team with look dramatically different than it does now. I like cheering for my home team, drinking beers at the pub with buddies, etc etc...the only time I get worked up is the playoffs.

I had faith until July 1st, since then it's same old same old, but we still have our 2nd round pick.

Me too, we've had four first round picks in the past two years that look to be very good picks. Get to year three and see where we're at. Who knows, they may surprise a few of you whiners. Kassian steps up, Bonino turns out to be a good player, Jensen gets to the next level, it's no where near as bad as some are making it out to be.
- LeftCoaster

Where are you finding all of this optimism? I applaud it but I just don't see it. There are a lot of 'what ifs' in your thinking. Based on history I got to go with negativity.

But I don't want to be labelled a whiner. Just a realist...
