At this point I'd take a run at him but I wouldn't be surprised if Boston managed to grab him and make him a star again. - SuperSchennBros

Any suggestions as to how we get better? We already brought back Umburger who only has a year less then Lecavalier but gets paid more, so we should be set for a long Cup run this year, right? |

This year?
Sell the dead weight (LeCavalier) and give the kids time to grow. Organic build and wait it out. This team is a few years out. Unless they can bring in two upper tier d-men to that back end I don't see a cup.
Not sure I see the talent up front either. A lot depends on the development of Coots and bSchenn. Right now its G and Voracek and a lot of the rest complimentary.
I am not a fan of bringing in turds to take away ice time from youth to just make the playoffs so we can grab our balls and say we did it. Leave that for the Ottawa police.
Mediocrity is for the Leafs. Set the standard higher. |

I believe this team can compete for a cup next year with the talent we have, just depends on a lot of players playing to their full potential. I truthfully think this team is a contender now. We were one of the better teams in the East last season, and lost to the eventual Eastern Conference champs.
We have a young squad that only needs to worry about one thing: growth. As long as this team does not become stagnant, we will continue to get better. We have most of the pieces we need. Would adding a Doughty-esque dman put us over the top? Of course!
But the way some people talk about our roster.....my god, you'd think we were the (frank)ing Oilers.
This team is damn good. I think it's more about their collective cohesiveness and becoming a real TEAM than it is about pieces that we don't have.

No worries. I am far from the optimist about this crew.
If all the pieces come together sure they can come out of the east... Then get female dog slapped in the final like the Rangers. Again, set the standard higher. They are a few years out, and some missing talent away from that upper tier imo.
I don't hate them by any means, the players anyway... Think there is heart there. I'll enjoy the ride but not expect much for 3-4 years.

Exactly. This team is playoff caliber. Winning the cup has more to do with team cohesiveness, overall organizational depth, and a bit of luck.
And what I mean by that, is there really is no specific roster blue-print for a cup winning team. All you have to do is look at the Bruins and the Blackhawks to realize that. |

haha (frank) I despise that saying. I would rather be an upper tier team for a few years that plays the odds instead of one hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. Not to say don't go looking to improve but keep the long term picture in focus. Don't make moves to just make the playoffs every year wasting assets/picks because it makes you feel better as an organization.
That whole make it to the dance because you might win it is part of the problem for years imo. I think its homer-istic.
Again no worries here, we all have our thoughts. |

See, I disagree.
I think that talent lies within players like the Schenns, Couturier, Laughton, Akeson, Ghost, and so on. If these players continue to mature and grow, guys like Simmonds/Jake/Read/Mason continue to produce, and we continue to beat the injury bug (for the most part), I think we have that talent now. I just love the core of this team, and really hope their together for a long, long time.
Believe me when I say I feel where you're coming from, though.

I think they have taken a big step to fill that void with the drafting of D in recent years. That's nice to see.
Do think as that develops they will need one more elite guy up front as is. Hopefully one of bSchenn/Coots develop into that next tier of player.
Really just have to hope that they hit a home-run with some of the young D in the system. Need at least one to be of an upper grade. Having a d-core full of capable top 4 guys is solid and all, but personally I think you need some of the real warhorses. Mediocrity is BS in my eyes.
Its where I agree with Hextall trying to build the Phantoms. The pieces that will make the Flyers a cup winner imo, are the one's the drafted in recent years. Hopefully anyway. |

So you don't see Giroux, out of all the players now and in the future as the piece that will make the Flyers a cup winner? This is one of the more puzzling statements made. |

The most frustrating thing for me is that the core is pretty damned good. It's not far off. Right now they're hamstrung with some awkward contracts and a bad mix on defense. |

I want Claude Giroux at minimum to rival Sidney Crosby. I want Giroux's team to rival Crosby's team. This is more then us being able to beat the Penguins during the regular season. I want the Flyers to holding their own against any team every year. With this offseason I'll own up to being impatient but I don't get the feeling that we've gotten better. If Lecavalier gets traded, I don't get the feeling the return will make us better. I get more of the feeling that we were fine with the team we had entering the playoffs, we just needed a couple tweeks and add-ons.
Now I do have some hope. Many didn't like and probably still do not like the Talbot for Downie deal. I liked it a lot at the time. I feel that deal and the Emery fight turned our team around. It's a deal like that during the regular season that might really change my mind. |
