I think at best(or worse depending on how you look at it) you'll see only one of them lose a spot to a younger player. The younger players aren't ready, and the ones that already have AHL experience aren't good enough IMO. Outside of Corrado and Jensen.
- Nucker101

I think Bonino and Vey are all but pencilled in. Kassian ,Mathias Jensen and Sedins also that leaves two spots and three players, and Horvat is a big question mark seeing he would need to go back to JR.

Edit : forgot about Vrbata that leaves one top 9 spot although Mathias could see 4 th line duties

I think "Change is Coming" meant they're looking to turn this team back into a playoff team after missing out last year. I agree with your points and therefore find it tough to read some of the recent moves made any other way.

That said, a trade or two could change that outlook considerably. I think at this point I'm firmly in "wait and see" mode until October to watch what unfolds.

- AlexF

That's true. I just hope that high draft picks aren't involved.

So that leaves you trading core roster players or prospects. The value of our prospects is low (overall). Letting them play at the NHL level will allow them to be better scouted. Their value probably goes up because it can't get much lower.

At some point this organization will have to go with a youth movement because our many older core players are here to stay until their long term contracts run out (or make it difficult for the canucks to get value in a trade because of the NTC).

I really do believe that you won't see any great change until the twin leave. Not saying I want them to leave, it will just be a series of UFA signings and stop gaps until they are gone. Our prospect pool will continue to suffer because of it.

During Weiesbrod's tenure in Boston, their collegiate FA signings(undrafted) who ended up making the NHL included Matt Bartkowski (D) and Kevan Miller (D).

They also never drafted a collegiate player higher than 5th. I hope Benning gives him a similar role here, don't trust the guy who's always looking to find diamonds in the rough with early picks, but give him a guy in the later rounds or sign a couple of undrafted players.

I think this year jobs can be taken away from Highins Burrows and Hansen. Besst player will win the spot. We finished 24 th last year with the core so I think all spots except a few are open for business

I think your right one or 2 could lose a spot.

Sorry man, I do not agree.

I think there are very little positions open because this team wants to earn money so therefore it needs to stay competitive. The canucks aren't in development mode. They are in money mode.

Its nice to see quality people in the coaching spots. There may have been issues from the past that they needed to work out. It seems as though coaching ideals fell together in the right spot.

Speaking of talking hockey I was hoping to expand on our conversation the other week about canuck UFA signings, dogging it for a better draft position, etc, etc.

I've been thinking about it and looked up some numbers. Our current group of prospects may be considered too unskilled to play in the NHL. I agree about that perception. But many of them are in the 20 to 21 year old range. It's getting to be now or never for many of them.

I still think that's more an owner decision than a good hockey decision to fill positional needs with older UFAs then prospects. But that's another topic.

I remember when many of us complained that AV didn't play his young guys/prospects enough. Always filling those positional holes with experienced, fringe NHL players. It used to drive some of us nuts. I see no change in practice today.

If any organization has learnt that roster players can sometimes come from unexpected places it should be the canucks. They have many full time roster players that were drafted high or undrafted all together. On paper, Burrows should never have seen NHL ice.

If you don't develope your players and give them a fair shot then how the hell do you know what you got? I still can't justify those UFA signing considering 'Change is Coming'.

Wasn't (isn't) that a great @#$# story?! from playing Woman's Division A college hockey to toiling in the ECHL to AHL to making the Canucks in a minor role and ultimately becoming one of the fan favourites and a very good player. I love that kind of stuff and hope we see it again soon (maybe Virtanen is a candidate?)

After 4+ years of sell outs you would think they would let things relax a little.

I think he will be a few years. He is still only 17. Lots of time. 2 years from now he will be a regular.

My biggest concern (and what also is keeping us from being competitive IMO) is that we currently have no line that is the heir apparent to the Sedin top line. If we had that in the organization or something close to it the outlook for the next years would look substantially different. As it stands there are still a lot of questions without answers on what happens when the Sedins can no longer face top pairing D. Some people here feel we're already there.

Regarding the competition, I mentioned this earlier but as much as management love to say all spots are up for grabs if there are too many vets on 1-way contracts they'll still keep them up and send the young guys on 2-ways down, even if the young guys out-perform the vets in camp. It happens all the time but Benning is a new GM so I'm hoping for a different result here.

Yeah and that makes them a joke. FA doesn't want a winner he wants a money maker.

I like it, need some feisty guys who can light it up. Mccann I am interested in seeing how he unfolds. Could be a high reward type guy if he can take a big step fw offensively in the O this year.
