They'll be good in 2015, need some retooling in 2016 and probably 2017, and they'll be back in contention in 2018. - buffalofan19
It all depends. All it ensures is that they will be a pretty good team for a while, which is great, but as seen in Pitt the standards become incredibly high when you have 2 superstars that have won a cup.

Good I didn't want Kane in Buffalo, 10.5 mill is a joke. - SABRES 89
That team will no doubt feel the crunch under the cap and the teams overall success will be hurt. But they have to do what they have to do. Pat is mutherf***ing rich.

I have a feeling at least one of those guys are going to be traded sooner rather than later, in order to get max value and not have to worry about losing leverage in contract negotiations. - buffalofan19
That's possible, but it's not like there will be chump change coming back in a trade like that.
I give their management full props for juggling that roster year over year and still being a contender.

Well, if the cap remains the same next year, which it won't, but if it did, the Hawks have 3.2 million dollars to sign Saad, Richards or his replacement, Kruger, Leddy, Oduya or his replacement, Rozsival or his replacement and Rundblad. Should be entertaining to say the least. |

If Chicago gets another cup within the next 4 years and consistently goes deep in the playoffs for the next 4 or 5 (WCF at least twice) I think that's considered a win. You have to pay big money to win it all and if it works then they made the right move. If they fall out of the playoffs in the first or second round for the next 6 years like the Penguins have done (aside from 12-13 when they were swept in the ECF) then itll look like the killer.
tl;dr: If it works they look like geniuses, if not they'll be idiots. |

I actually think it's the opposite.
They have benefitted from good draft picks from when they were still drafting high
The lower you draft the less talent you get, also when you are a contender you tend to trade picks/prospects at the deadline. - sbroads24
The long term works because the cap has always gone up by crazy amounts. When it is 90 mill in a few years this won't be so bad at all. They already had a huge talent dump off and survived just fine. They will again. |

Now Sharp and Hossa look to be out the door, and a bunch of scrubs to play the 3-6 defense slots.
IMO unless the cap really goes up, they will be a very, very different team in 2 years |

Sharp yes, Hossa probably not as his salary is very reasonable. Also, is he subject to the early retirement penalty?

The cap wont reach that high while these contracts are still in place. The main reason for the big jump is the TV deal that was signed in Canada, but the Canadian $ isn't as strong as it was so I don't see anything that crazy happening in regards to a 90 million salary cap |

90 mil is nuts . There will be teams that cannot afford to make it to the cap floor. |

It has always gone up by crazy amounts - almost always more than we think it will. That's part of the reason why we keep having lockouts. |

Deal won't be done here. Murray wants a massive overpayment to move Myers and Holland isn't stupid |

Personally I wouldn't move Myers for Mantha straight up, and apparently Murray wants 3 pieces, Mantha, a roster player and a pick. I doubt a trade is made. |

ya too much. I like Myers due to his size, youth and Chara-like potential but the wings cant take a gamble like that in hope he turns out like that. |

any less than mantha and it turns into a spare parts deal for our best player, who happens to be 6'8" and a potential perennial all star. gotta give to get. |

You do know its a revenue related formula...It took a 12 year 5.2 Billion dollar TV deal for the cap to go up 9 million, on top of a 12% increase in general revenue. Where is the extra revenue going to come from to get the cap up to $90 Million?? |

I know of a few people that could drink enough to boost that revenue a few million dollars not enough to fill a NHL arena |

Mantha is intriguing, but still a risk.
Personally, I think Armia could turn out to be an excellent option to ride shotgun with Reinhart |
