SB tends to overpay - hurts in the first few years but usually is advantageous in later years.
The twins should be paid 9mil max, come on. So you are saying that the twins are basically twice as good as keith or almost 3 times as good as Hjammer.
Just a bad decision by the twins - the Hawks will field a lesser team - thus the twins play more and their skill level will drop as they will be tired or more prone to injury. so sad.
One can say the window will be closed if they sign that contract. - Topshelf2010
One can say that, but one would be wrong. AT WORST, the window closes (for the record, I don't agree) in 2015-16 when their contracts kick in. Not in 2014-15, when they are still at $6.3mil/yr.
Also, your "what you are saying is they are twice as good as Keith or three times as good as Hjalmarsson is?" argument is ridiculous on multiple levels. Most notably, Keith's contract - it was signed when the salary cap was at $59.4 million. Completely different market than the Toews/Kane deals - the salary cap is at $69mil now and is likely to be at least $73mil when they actually take effect. |

Another point about your post.
It is highly doubtful that Clendenning is brought up any time soon. First he has to take the next step and by that I mean he has to be better in the AHL. Then should he get a look in the NHL it is a stretch to see him ever be more than a third pair. You will live and die with his overall game. So you are correct when you say that he would be a disaster if he came up (if you meant any time soon) and his long term prognosis isn't very good, either.
The aforementioned is my thinking all along, and reinforced by comments on this board as far as Clendenning goes.
Now if he is a lot better in the AHL this season...I see his future this way: The offensive side you like a lot but the defensive side is probably always going to be a concern. I just do not think he ever gets a lot of ice in Chi unless he has a reliable partner on his pairing. So, Clendenning cannot even be thought of as part of the potential group that could play in Chi at least until some time half way or late next season after he has shown better....And then he would never have any spot long term in Chi anyway.
Considering the other prospects have some offensive ability I would hope that Fournier, Johns, VanReimsdycke prove better defensively than Clendenning ever will.
There are a couple of collegiate dmen whom I have heard have made strides in their development, but as far as I know none could be considered or projected as anything but minor league fodder. The swede, Norrell, maybe he has a chance to be ok.not enough data on him to say much right now.
This is all very premature for the dmen prospects. Johns has things he is not good at and only Dahlbeck is ready for an NHL challenge. But Johns has a lot of good things to like in his ability and demeanor. I would like to see him be a regular third pair dman one day, and I would like to see if Dahlbeck could progress to the level of the fourth best dman on the team.
Whether the other kids on "d" work out is too big a question to answer....better than Clendenning is my guess. But fans just have to wait and see how all perform in the AHL for at least half season before guessing at their future. A future that may be many competing for two jobs on defense, maybe three if one is a reserve 7th. I am not projecting anyone any time soon on Chicago blueline other than Dahlbeck.
No, not as much as I would like to ....still no for Johns for the time being. - jhawk59
Clendening and Dahlbeck only have 1 year left on their ELC. Which means they will be put on waivers, if not traded, after next season. Basically they have one more year to develop b4 Stan trades them or they make the club.

True, but those won't be the only new contracts in '15-'16, namely Saad, Kruger, Oduya and Leddy (unless one or more of them is moved). Obviously all of the others will be played off of 19/88. |

Agreed......if in fact they do get the rumored 10.8 million it won't affect the team next year.....and may only be an negative impact the first year of the deal...the cap will keep going up and up and up........so the idea of only being able to field a lesser team is very short sighted...... |

The trouble is that the one year can be enough to force a team to lose players they don't want to lose. Then, once they're gone, they're gone, as they say. |

True.....and a good point but this may be behind the motivation to keep TT and to be loading up on Dmen like Van Reimsdyke, Rundblad, etc......and it is also why Kevin Hayes should rethink his position to not sign with the Hawks....if he has already done so. |

I think $10.8 Million means no more cups. It may mean a Selke here or a Hart there, but it does not bring team glory to Chicago. I always figured I would be lucky if I saw the cup in Chicago once in my life. I guess seeing it twice makes me twice as lucky. Maybe after their rumored 8-year deals are up...
Enjoy your millions, wonder twins. Hope the Plague of the Penguin Problem (superstars with no one to back them up) doesn't mean more injuries for you, because you're going to have to earn those salaries with more playing time to meet the expectations that accompany them.
The clock is ticking on Sharp and Seabrook and probably Shaw as well... I'm sure we'll all regret their losses sooner rather than later. |
