Netherlands will advance tomorrow. They can beat the Germans, even though so I am not sold on their D and goalie. |

I was hoping for better results from England this year, when I watched the 1st game against Italy I was impressed with their aggressive offensive pushes. Really thought they would put it together.
For a country so loaded with high end talent, they sure struggle on the world cup stage. - Makita
England's problem always seems (to me) like frontrunner-itis (a mentality thing). Relying on technical skill while being soft & delusional with no killer instinct. They chalk up their failures to tough luck rather than looking inward. They're the Canucks/Sharks of international football. |

Jankowski stands out as a bad pick. He apparently mainly scouts collegiate and HS propsects. So I gotta assume he had a hand in their selection of Gillies in the third round which was a nice value pick. And also had a say in Boston signing undrafted Matt Bartkowski. - Nucker101
Jankowski hasn't even played a game in the NHL yet and people are writing him off.
He has put up some decent numbers for a player his age in college and is still growing into his body. The guy has the skills to make it into the NHL, it just wont be
for a couple more years. |

But Austria is... you're the same as... culturally similar... umm.. - bezz44
!#$@#% Germany - if this was Hockey they would be lambasted as a result of their running up the score. Was it really @#$@ necessary to keep pushing in the second half? a*sholes.
Still pretty stunned at the result! Mind you, Brasil was without Newmar and Silva was a ghost nowhere to be had (@$# Fifa )
But I called it - Germany are just too powerful. It's going to be Germany and Holland with Germany taking it. ;
Edit: way ta go, AlexF, you put a @#$ jinx on the Brasilians |

I don't think he's a terrible player, but, his numbers are definitely not stellar two years after his draft. He's pretty much along the lines of Canucks 4th round pick Joseph Labate, very similar numbers in their second years post draft.
I doubt either ever play much, if at all, in the NHL. |

It doesn't help the optics of that pick that Olli Maata was selected right after him.
Why take him with the first round pick? Calgary could have taken him with the 7th rounder pick and everybody would have still been scratching their heads |

The Netherlands play tight defensivly and usually pretty rough. Combined with a quick transition and really good forwards and of course Robben flopping his way to victory.
The Germans have problems when it is not wide open.
F*** Germany!

Gawd, my mom hates him! (even from his days in the Premier League)
But you're right, I think the only team that can give Germany a challenge is Holland. I just hope it's not gong show
Edit: incidentally, my Mom is a footie fanatic and probably knows 3/4's of the players and hence my limited knowledge through osmosis
Edit 2 - first and last time I will be using the term 'footie' |

It's pretty rare to see a freshman or junior player come into college and steal a spot from a senior player. Jankowski has been playing on the second line for both years and hasn't really looked out of place. I would expect him to make a big jump this year since he will be on the top line. I still think it is too early to say what will happen with him. I think people get too caught up in judging draft picks too quickly. After the first 5 picks it pretty much becomes a crap shoot, it's almost impossible to project the potential for any player being drafted after that point. |
