do you folks see umberger as a first line player ?
i don't - -davies-
No, I don't. Only as a fill in, not as a permanent 1st line wing. |

Yeah but, you know, as the salary cap goes up, they'll look like steals. - jmatchett383
Wow. I have tracked sports for a long time, through the inception of salary caps, and all I can say for this one is that I harbor doubts that you can win a championship with salary allocation like that.
I've been wrong before, will be again. But I have doubts about those deals |

For me it still comes back to creating 2 or 3 significant holes when you trade for a high caliber player like Evander Kane.
If the Flyers do something like this I think it will be for a top pair defenseman.
And these types are just not really available.
Maybe they decide they would rather have a top winger like Kane and trade a center like BSchenn for him. To me that would be a fair hockey trade.
But BSchenn + + is too much. And likely someone else will offer that type of deal. - Marc D
This is from Cordell's blog:
Chevy and #nhljets would want a young top 6 F or young top 4 D in return for Kane. Player must be coming of age or in prime and locked up
Schenn for Kane?
edit: Holy bananas Donky Kong, didn't realize Kane's AAV was 5.25 |

Yeah, it's OK to trade for secondary pieces. It's very hard to trade for a great goalie, a #1D or a #1C. - Feanor
We did draft a number one center |

And a #1 goalie. But we traded him to Columbus. We also drafted a #1 defenseman, but they traded Kevin Marshall away before he got a chance to REALLY show what he can do. |

I'm just joking. Someone earlier said AMac's deal will look like a steal as the cap goes up, and someone else said that is a ridiculous way to evaluate a deal. |

Berube's quote was an eye opener for me.
I saw Umby with Couts and Read in the Downie spot.
And BSchenn as the #1 line LW. |

That's what I envisioned. But, then again, I think we'll see a lot of juggling throughout camp and preseason. |

Bob was an undrafted FA signing and Giroux was a RW when he was drafted... Technically. |

Well, we did get Stolarz, and we were able to trade a 3rd for Mason. So, in the end, it's Bob + a 3rd for Stolarz + Mason. Rumor has it that Leighton was involved, but...come on, it's Leighton. |

Don't think B Schenn fits that. He hasn't exactly come of age. I think more along the lines of Josi, Shattenkirk, Okposo, etc |

No, I thought you were joking. I'm just trying to,think of an analogy for this, and I do believe we are in uncharted territory -- even Pittsburgh isn't that lopsided |

Chicago is going to have to deal with what Pitt is dealing with right now in a few years. |

Mason is young so we have the number one goalie too now.
and the comparrison between bobrovsky and Mason
Bobrovsky - 25 - 58gp 2.38gaa .923 svs% - 5.625 cap hit
Mason - 26 - 61gp 2.50gaa .917 svs% - 4.10 cap hit
I think we are ok. Numbers are close but we have some cost certanity with mason as Bob is an RFA next year. |

Should be great for young Schenn's development, moving him to wing back to C back to winger several times

This is really off-topic, but how good is Connor McDavid?
I know he was the 3rd player to get exceptional status from the OHL (Tavares are Ekblad the other 2), but the OHL is the only CHL league that has the exceptional status, and it's only been around for less than 10 years, so I don't know how much weight it carries.
Also, aside from the WJC (where he didn't impress me a bit), I haven't really seen him play. I know Crosby had the quote about how McDavid was better than he was at 16, but Crosby's also very diplomatic about stuff like that. Does anyone know more about him that what the analysts say, or has anyone seem him regularly enough to say that he'll be a Crosby-type (minus any negatively-perceived antics)? |

Chicago is going to have to deal with what Pitt is dealing with right now in a few years. - FlyersSteve118
Even though Pittsburgh could've been managed slightly better, I agree with your sentiment -- I mean, look at the Rags. Yeah, you can get guys for your bottom 6. Absolutely. But as soon as you get good ones, and they perform, they are going to want to score long-term contracts.
Those guys tend to be slightly older/more experienced, on championship teams. So not guys on ELCs...I think it's going to be difficult finding the right mix of affordable, quality depth. Really difficult |
