i've always said dmen are crazier because they block shots. being weird and being crazy are very different things. also, to be fair, that phrase came around a long time ago when goalie gear was significantly less protective...no masks, so it was a reasonable thing to say. it's a little different now. that said, it still takes balls to stand there and get blasted, despite being protected. you can still get hurt. the mental aspect of failure is also significantly higher on a goalie compared to any other player. it's not even close. for people who rip on goalies i say stand in a goalie's skates for even one game, and then talk to me. to me, this is where the "crazy" label applies to goalies...to willingly subject yourself to that kind of scrutiny, it takes something. - hammarby31
The mental aspect of being a goalie...I'm not too sure there's anything in sports like it. |

Both great players. But this just shows how deals and salaries escalate. What's considered an overpayment today, is a bargain in a few years. The Flyers have Giroux for the next 8 seasons at 8.275M. If this is a sign of what's to come, that will be a fricken bargain in a few years. - MJL
People needing new contracts in 2 offseasons:
Stamkos
Kopitar
E. Staal
Seabrook
Yandle
Byfuglien
Kesler
Backes
Hamhuis
Ladd
Voracek
E. Johnson
Backstrom (Capitals)
Those are gonna be some crazy signings to watch. Stamkos could probably be looking at 12M+ by then. |

I would have taken a run at Heatley. I think there is some juice left to squeeze out of him. A Heatley-Getzlaf-Perry line could be dangerous. - SuperSchennBros

The thing is more about acquiring players on entry level or bridge deals that can play on the cheap.
Almost as bad as Giroux not being in his "prime" in a few years will be that will be that Voracek Schenn and Couts will be making a lot more money. - FlyersSteve118
I think my idea of "Core Players" is a lot different from others. To me, having a core is completely separate from drafting. In fact age shouldn't be a factor either. It's who your building your team around and who you can win with.
Jerome Iginla wasn't drafted by Calgary but he was definitely apart of their young core once upon a time. |

The Math doesn't seem right because using just the Hawks as an example, they've had a revolving door of players since 2010, while hanging on to their top guns of Toews, Kane, Keith, Sharp, Hossa and Seabrook. Not saying your wrong. - SuperSchennBros
I took the numbers of how the players were acquired directly from the NHL.com website.
In looking at LA acquiring Carter and Richards. They traded B Schenn and Wayne Simmonds for Richards. Both players were drafted by LA. Traded Jack Johnson, drafted by LA, for Carter. |

(frank)! Sometimes I forget that Carter was traded for a pick. I also forget
EDIT
I also forget he wasn't directly traded to LA. |

No doubt about it. Being one on one with a player that you know can rip it 100MPH and willingly going out and challenging him, and standing in front of that, takes balls. I don't care how much equipment they have on.

The closest thing I can think of is a pitcher giving up a home run, but that doesn't touch it.
Also, my comment was lighthearted and only slightly serious, just so you know! |

I don't know that anybody thinks any differently. There's no doubt that Voracek and Simmonds, and B Schenn are part of the Flyers core. They weren't drafted by the Flyers. A player doesn't have to be drafted by the team to be part of the core. I don't think anyone is saying that.

there are a couple of guys i skate with now who can hammer the puck - probably near 100 - and when they wind up, i absolutely experience some fear, despite all of the pro level gear i wear. my feet, knees, crotch, inner arms, and neck...all at risk. in fact, i'm supposed to be playing against one of them tonight, but he's not skating in the summer league. i can relax a little. |

Well as a goalie you'd be backing me up and (hopefully) cleaning up my messes more often than not!
Funny story:
I was one of if not the best player on my Varsity team. First line winger, played in all situations, was good defensively, hardly took any penalties, and I think my best attribute was my poise with the puck. I hardly made any mistakes with the puck, ESPECIALLY in the defensive zone. That's actually, looking back, what I considered the best part of my game.
Anyway, in a HUGE game, I made a terrible, terrible turnover in the defensive zone. There was like 6 minutes left in a tie game- one we needed to either tie or win to squeak into the playoffs....I gathered the puck in the corner off a dump in where the other team was changing. Our D was also changing (I really don't know why, but whatever), but I had plenty of time. There was no forecheckers.
So I corral the puck, and look to make an outlet pass up the near side boards....whiff on it, and the opposing player picks it up just inside my blue line and basically had a breakaway, as he was breaking in to forecheck with speed.
Goalie stones him.
We go on to tie the team.
I bought him a steak dinner at Texas Roadhouse afterwards |
