I was gonna give Bill a hard time about linking a Randy Miller article, but it was pretty good. Kid's had a rough go of it.

I guess you are right RJ should be able to get at least 20-25 playing with G and Jake
If that is where they play him. Hartnell did bring some " toughness" to that line and I know a lot of dumb penalties. Maybe B Schenn can bring that element on a more responsible level. - 3flyerkids
One thing Hartnell seemed to excel at that I liked was that he could bring out the absolute worst in certain Penguin players. I don't know if it's how he talks poop to them or little stuff on the ice or whatever. |

" Legion of Poon"
I never heard that one
Who were the other members " Richards and Carter"?
- 3flyerkids
Hartnell, Richards, Carter, Upshall, and Lupul.
Its not my moniker, that honor I believe goes to JSaq.

That's what I mean he did get under the opponents skin. He took a lot of crap penalties but he also drew his fair share.
They need someone who can play with an " edge" but be a little more responsible than 19.

I think they'll look at him on just about every line. To be perfectly honest this is a fantastic time for some of our forwards to make a case to move around. It should be exciting for them, and nail chewing for us. - FlyersGrace
I know lines will be shuffled around during the season, but if it were up to me this is how I would start...
Schenn-Giroux-Voracek
Raffl-Vinny-Simmonds
Umberger-Couts-Read
Winnik (1.0 mil)-Laughton-Pebbles
Rinaldo
Coburn-Streit
Timonen-Schenn
Grossman-MacDonald
Mason
Emery
I tried to spread the wealth on defense...

Hartnell would let a personal miscue get to him and it would take him off his game for shifts at a time. I hated seeing him on the bench half a period later still slamming his stick against the dasher and shaking his head.

I think Couturier is ready to take a little bit of that on himself. I love it when he gets an attitude. He is big and getting stronger. He also seems to be one of those who gets in Malkins face.
But it is fun to watch when Couturier plays with an edge, add that do his stellar defensive game and he can have the ability to really piss off opposing players.

Players received formal letters about conditioning, laying out expectations for the fitness levels that will be expected on day one of training camp.
The fact that the organization felt the need to send a letter is more than a little surprising to me, as if the hundreds of thousands to millions they send to the players isn't enough of a reminder that this is indeed a business and a job and there are expectations to be met. |

Doesn't shock me at all. In fact I like it. Implied expectations get ignored in every job. But if they are defined in writing then you can't complain you weren't aware. You can still ignore them but then you realize that there are consequences. At least I hope there are consequences! |

In response to something that was asked earlier this morning on the last thread in regards to VL.
The reason I think he would be most successful playing between Read and Raffl are as follows. Both Read and Raffl can carry the puck well through the neutral zone and gain entry into the attack zone, which take the pressure off of VL. Both wingers work the wall well and have the ability to get the puck to Vinnie where he likes it and, perhaps most importantly, both wingers are good defensively which is a must if you are going to play with VL.
I think if VL is relatively healthy, plays with Read and Raffl, and is the main sniper on the 2nd pp unit, he can put up numbers along the lines of:
70 games 25+ goals and 50+ points.

hi bill i asked this of the threadlings yesterday, curious what your response would be..
are you really comfortable with the idea of umberger on the top line?
i am not. - -davies-
Not sure of this, but I think if you try out a line combination and it doesn't work out, you don't have to keep said combination together for the entire season.

That's not much different than what I have, cept I would save the million you are spending on Winnik and go with:
Schenn-G-Jake
Umberger-Couturier-Simmonds
Raffl-VL-Read
PEB-Laughton-Akeson or Rinaldo
If Laughton isn't ready for primetime, I would look to just re-sign Hall for that spot, as he will likely cost well under a million. |

Interesting thought. The question remains whether either is a good enough playmaker to get Vinny the puck when he wants it.
I also really liked the Read/Coots chemistry and would hate to break it up. I'd actually like to see Umberger with those two for a few lines to see if that has potential to really be great. |

doesn't really have anything to do with my question.. is this more of that highly touted upper echelon flyers thread sarcasm? |
