He's still awesome. You should see him on Sarah Baicker's facebook account. I'm surprised she hasn't blocked him. |

I think the cap issues are overblown, and every June and July we get into the cap panic stages of the off season. Secondly, a large reason for having to overspend for defenseman was the injury to Pronger. And that wasn't anyone's fault. And I think you can definitely say that in the beginning of his tenure, they sacrificed some youth. But for the most part, since the trades of Carter and Richards, Holmgren has stuck with the young core that he built, and hasn't waverd from that. He also took the team from last overall to the Cup Finals.
Like I said, failure to draft and develop defenseman is a legitimate criticism that has hurt this team. And that happened under Holmgren's watch. - MJL
Then we agree. By "situation" I by no means was saying Homer left a trash heap, only that Hexy has to work around some slightly inflated and too long of contracts due to slotting a team post Pronger |

I find it interesting that a conversation broke out about whether Homer was a good or bad GM from one of my posts. I never said that he was a bad GM. I thought he was good overall, I'd grade him in the B or B+ range. He took the season we never talk about into a legitimate team in one season. I love the Richards and Carter trades. It took a big set to pull them off and I thought the return was excellent. Obviously in retrospect, some defense coming back would have been great, but no one could have expected Pronger going down like that. For years I thought drafting and developing was the only long term solution in a cap setting and that was my biggest complaint about Homer... he traded too many picks to negotiate against himself for FAs he wanted. That doesn't damn him, but IMO it was his biggest fault. |

I think most of us view him as a decent GM, but not great. I think his biggest problem was overpaying and jumping the gun on several deals. I felt he could have been more patient |

When I take the disaster Homer inherited and balance it against the condition of the club when he passed the baton on to Hextall, I have to say he left the roster in better shape than he found it, and therefore I believe he deserves a fair bit of credit. To say that he was a bad GM is, in my idiot opinion, silly.

With Pronger, this team is probably a legit Cup contender over the last few years. |

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Conditioning, Hartnell, Umberger, Larsson and More - bmeltzer
There is no doubt that there are clear cut pros and cons to having Scott Hartnell on your team but he still leaves behind a huge hole to be filled. This is why I ask for Hextall to possibly fill it if he can do so. I have no problem with Scott Hartnell being moved as long as he's properly replaced.
I fear the Flyers as an organization are creating a bad name for themselves by making the moves that they do, the way they do.
Mike Richards signed a career long commitment to stay with this team from the beginning of his career, to the end. Even took on Captain duties with the expectation that he was safe. Obviously this didn't workout. Both Jeff Carter and James van Riemsdyk signed deals during the regular seasons when they were up for extension but moved that summer before the ink could dry. Joffery Lupul is another player who comes to mind who had the same experience here. I'm sure many will jump on me but if I'm a player, I'd be skeptical towards these types of antics.
This is just my feeling.
Now, I'm not in the least defending Hartnell or any of these other players. It is a business. Some of these young guys need to grow up. On the flip side of the coin, don't ever think the Philadelphia Flyers can never end up on the same boat as the Toronto Maple Leafs. Any team could in the league. The Leafs were a consistent Playoff team up until the 2004-05 lockout.
All I'm saying is, this "My way of the highway" attitude could become an negative thing. Don't think for one second the players in our dressing room do not have it in them to someday ask for a trade simply because they're no longer happy here. At least Scott Hartnell did his job and did not wan to leave. |
