Are we all relieved Ott signed elsewhere? Probably leight but the Flyers reportedly offered 2yrs/2mil at the start of free agency and never budged from there. |

With Pronger, this team is probably a legit Cup contender over the last few years. - PhillySportsGuy
If Mason still would've ended up here, I could see that. |

Yes and no.
During this offseason we've lost a lot of physicality and we're now left with Wayne Simmonds, Brayden Schenn, Luke Schenn, Nicolas Grossmann, Brayden Coburn, Zac Rinaldo and Jay Rosehill as our more physical players. Oh yeah and Ray Emery.
I wanted Steve Ott but I didn't see the point after trading for RJ Umburger. |

We're still a lot more physical than most teams. Umberger brings some toughness, plus when Hartnell was on an oh-so-often cold streak, he wasn't much help physically. |

I find it interesting that a conversation broke out about whether Homer was a good or bad GM from one of my posts. I never said that he was a bad GM. I thought he was good overall, I'd grade him in the B or B+ range. He took the season we never talk about into a legitimate team in one season. I love the Richards and Carter trades. It took a big set to pull them off and I thought the return was excellent. Obviously in retrospect, some defense coming back would have been great, but no one could have expected Pronger going down like that. For years I thought drafting and developing was the only long term solution in a cap setting and that was my biggest complaint about Homer... he traded too many picks to negotiate against himself for FAs he wanted. That doesn't damn him, but IMO it was his biggest fault. - mmcclatchy
I think this is a well thought out and objective summary of Holmgren as a GM. I think drafting is definitely a key to long term success. And Holmgren did that for the most part. Just didn't draft well with defenseman. I personally don't have a problem with some of the moves that he made to trade for UFA rights. For example with MacDonald. Based on the success rate of 2nd and 3rd round picks, if a team identifies a player that is a future free agent, and it will make the team better, I think that's a good move. And I really think the NHL salary market is misunderstood by many. I think the MacDonald deal is market value for a UFA. And it's quite possible it could've cost more if other teams were involved in a bidding war for a player.

Nice to have GM that knows what the price is and at least so far won't over pay. |

Well he didn't really know what the price was, as the offer wasn't good enough. And the offer was likely driven by the amount of money they had to spend. And that's if it's actually true that they made the offer.

If you owned the Flyers, how much say would you want to have in certain areas such as coaching hiring/firing, drafting, free agency, lineups, call ups and anything else you can think of
Also, what would be the first move you'd make as the new owner of the Flyers? |

Wow, good question. I think that's a fine line. As an Owner you want to keep some checks and balances in place, and certainly would want to have final say in financial decisions. But to be a good owner, you have to let the people you hire to make the player decisions, do their job. I don't think you can undermine the GM, and certainly not the Coach. I don't see doing that as a winning formula.
As far as the last question, really have to think about that one. But a good conversation starter.

I would let my GM do whatever he wanted, but would ask him to run major moves by me (Like if he wanted to move Giroux). I don't feel you can evaluate anyone without giving them the opportunity to make the moves. I would just make sure the GM holds the same organizational philosophy as I do. |

Hextall's price was $2 million and he held firm on HIS price. You can assign to it any reason you want as to why he held firm. We will probably never know. |

Understood, but his acquisition breathed life back into the organization. It would be nice to retire a jersey before a guy is over the age of 50. He meant a great deal to the organization as far as increasing the value it is today. |

I do know because I know the salary cap numbers. That is about all he had to offer. That's my point. Based on that, I don't think we can assume that he was playing hard ball, and that's all he was willing to offer.
