They need to be better 5 vs 5 at any cost in my opinion. If this deal helps them get there I'm on board
- Just5

But does it make them better? Hartnell was one of their better 5v5 players. Umberger was one of Columbus' worst 5v5 players last year.

Did Hartnell benefit from who he played with? Yes
Did Umberger struggle because of injuries? Yes

I'm just concerned that those factors aren't enough to skew the numbers as much as they were.

Columbus fans were rejoicing after this trade. That makes me think Umberger is running on fumes.

Anyone else mad we didn't take a stab at heatley? I know he hasn't done well last few seasons, but for 1 year 1 mil. Pretty low risk and he still can shoot.
- arichardson22

Not me.

I don't think he fits in with what the Flyers are trying to do.

I also think he might be a shot player. He got the same exact contract as Steve Downie for whatever that's worth.

The optics on this deal are terrible, but I'm willing to see how it plays out.

Well scratch that one off. That's ok though.

Still wouldn't mind Galiardi or Winnik. Galiardi is still young

I see it as a deal to prove a point. It's similar to the Eagles getting rid of Desean because of his selfishness. I'm not comparing Hartnell to Desean as one is a thug and the other is Desean Jackson

I just think both franchises made their team's worse off, but wanted to prove a point that certain poop won't slide anymore. The difference being the Eagles seemed to be more prepared to move on by acquiring several offensive weapons. The Flyers still have a glaring hole on the top line.

I'm guessing it's more a matter of Chief asking for the proverbial 110% this summer.

The few guys who showed up sub-100% were already shamed.

- Tomahawk

Well, G, being the good captain he is, took one for the team already. Everybody else's summer should look great by comparison.

I will with great pleasure.

As a side, why would the Blues re-sign Ott? He was awful for them last season.

I personally would ignore what the fans think about the trade as a factor. When a player is injured and not playing well, he becomes a scapegoat. Sound familiar?

So with Ott off the borad FA i would still look at:

TJ Galiardi
Daniel Winnik
Devon Setagutchi
Dustin Penner
David Booth
Lee Stempniak
Jordan Schroeder

And maybe if they can't fit him in and he wants to play one more season.

Yikes. Talk about jumping the shark.

I'm sticking with the idea the Flyers wanted to get out from the 2 extra years in Hartnell's contract and calling it a day. It makes the most sense.

Hartnell had superior advanced stats to Umberger by a pretty wide margin. Although Hartnell is arguably a better forechecker than Umberger, the disparity of numbers was largely because Hartnell was usually on the ice with Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek (and often with Kimmo Timonen's defense pair with Braydon Coburn completing the five skaters on the ice). As a collective unit, those guys are more likely to have possession of the puck for the majority of their shifts.

This was my first thought when I saw some adv. stats tweeters squawking about the rolling 15 game corsi whatever difference ("you could land a 747 between these two lines"). I was told it was "reaching".

There seemed to be a general consensus among their fans. That's what scares me. If we got rid of Coburn, some people would be happy, but most of us would be upset if the return wasn't very good.

Normally, the initial feeling after a trade is accurate. At least for me it is.

It's also a style preference in both cases.

Desean was definitely a pain in the ass, I'm sure, but Kelly has things he likes to do with the offense that maybe Desean isn't adept at. Kelly also likes taller receivers and I think Danny Briere is taller than Desean Jackson.

Same with Hartnell. Hartnell is a fairly one dimensional player who is also not a great skater, whereas it seems like Hextall favors players who can skate and be versatile.
