Oh I agree. Girgs is good for what he brings which is why I did not comment much on him, but Grigs definitely was heads and shoulders above himself last time we saw him. He will be okay! I was one of the few it seems that did not give up on him in the first place! - Orphen22
the only voice that matters is his own...if he can get himself into gear and prove everyone wrong ill gladly watch him put up points in a sabres uniform |

I didn't get to see much. I was just curious, because they looked more...ahem..official...than I figured. I thought maybe they used a couple coaches (which I know the team doesn't really have right now to spare), but they had patches, numbers, etc, so I just wondered. - stashu
The three guys that worked tonight all work Division 1 or 3. When we worked the regular training camp we did a 4 man crew and we had 3 Division 1 guys and a former NHL who is now a AHL and D 1 guy as well. We know what we are doing!
I am going to miss being able to work these camps, I might fly home to work it still though |

My take on the scrimmage, from section 110, row 16:
Besides Girgs, Risto and Zadorov, who all looked dynamite:
I think Grigs looked pretty good, not great, but OK. He seemed to have an extra gear that he didn't possess last season. Good hustle.
I liked Baptiste and Bailey's games. Both skate like demons, hustle hard and go to the net.
Sundher is one slick mofo, with great wheels and awesome hands.
Same with Catenacci. Slick in tight spaces. Almost like a combination of Ennis and Roy. Works his a$$ off. I think he'll get a call up this year.
Lemieux is going to be a fan favorite. Lots of his jerseys will sell. Very impressed with him. Just. Doesn't. Stop.
Overall, the team is huge, extremely fast, defense is big and mobile, and they all work their arses off.

I'm pretty sure I was in the first row of the section you were in.
I still feel he will be really good. I also forgot that he was 6'3 and now he's 219 lbs.

Only in Buffalo will you hear about how all these guys on the team are not there for scoring...You hear Paul Hamilton at WGR550 say how "It's not this guys job to score"...To win a cup you need three lines that can score and a defense that can provide offense, teams that win cups are 99% of the time(last 40 years) in the top 5 in goals scored during the season. All the talk is about how BIG BIG huge these guys are in training camp...Big means nothing without talent, skating and grit. This new guy Samuels-Thomas describes himself as a power forward but he doesn't see him self putting up big points lol. Only in Buffalo. Sure, why not. Just have 75% of the team there for no scoring.
Doesn't look good for Armia, floater, he will go back to Euro land and play with his side kick Mike Ryan the great talent. Grigerenko is a bust, the guy is slow and gives a terrible effort. Dan Catenacci is smaller than a smurf and never goes near the net, put up only 10 goals in AHL. I'm not sure why people are saying that Buffalo has the best prospects in the entire league. Detroit has 3 forward prospects that are high end talents, guys that skate shoot and score.
Larsson is a solid player, will make a 3rd liner for some NHL team someday. At least he plays well in the D zone. Zadorov looks good, Ristolainan annoys me, the guy makes too many lazy passes and isn't putting up big numbers in AHL for an eight overall pick.
Girgensons, why is everyone so sure he's the next Ron Francis? How do you know he's such an amazing leader? Are you in the dressing room? The guy is a 15 goal scorer at best is he plays 17 minutes per game. First round picks are supposed to be for high end talent. - MrSquirrel

Girgs-Physically a step above,
Risto- Played a step above,
Zadorov- Shot and physical presence a step above,
and yes Also Grigo- Smart plays . IMO tough to judge with no chemistry which causes everyone to "float" One Day together they all looked ok.
Sundher showed the AHL has made progress
Lemieux is fun to watch but besides the chirps (like the old man) his pure talent isn't their yet. But like a Young Ott fun to watch.
Sam-Tough to judge on the first day but seemed to blend in. Lemieux was running around everywhere which isn't a type of play that excel alongside sam. Could've use a different pair
Arima- Not Amazing but good
Psysk- Didn't notice him at times which is a good thing for how he plays
McCabe- Good but forced at times seemed almost too comfortable
Fasching- Could be a better marcus Foligno |

In the last 16 years, 6 times the Cup winner wasn't in the top 5.
98/99 Dallas 8th
02/03 NJ 14th
06/07 Ana 9th
08/09 Pitts 6th
11/12 LA 29th
12/14 LA 26th
Without going any further you're only at most 85% of the time.
Please for everything holy stick to hiding nuts and leave the hockey talk to others.
Edit: That was just off the top of my head in the last 40 yrs (73/74-13-14) it has happened 14 times where the Stanley Cup winner was outside the top 5 in regular season scoring or 35% of the time. Nice guess though. |
