bill,

Any infoon Meuller? Kind of Suprised he hasn't signed anywhere yet. Also if you had to pick one phantom that could be a sleeper to make the team who would u pick.

I'm a little surprised he wasn't part of a package trade with Hartnell to Nashville earlier? I would have thought Hartnell would want to go back to Nashville before Columbus. Maybe because Vinny didn't want to.
- wrister

Doubt Nashville would have wanted to lay out the $$ for both VL and Hartnell

Problem on the cap will likely be a lot more severe each year going forward until their is a long term resolution. Fixing it requires a major deal where a big chunk of salary goes out and a lot less salary comes back (eg. Schenn, Scehenn, Umberger and LaCavalier for Kane). Now, of course, Winnipeg would never do that deal (too much salary) but you need to find something that changes the balance.

The Flyers don't have to do anything drastic. They can use LTIR Option 2 this season, and next year the cap will be going up and at least one or two of the young defensmen on ELCs will be coming in.

Even this season all they have to do to get under the cap on the last day of camp is trade Grossmann or LSchenn, something Hextall has said would be easy to do.

Answering why bring in Schultz as a 7th Dman, will it be keeping a young player from getting a crack:

First of all, if young guy comes in and knocks us over the head, I’ll make a move. It’s easy to move a defenseman. I’m not concerned about that. What I was more concerned with was leaving that spot there, and HAVING to bring in a kid. I don’t want a kid sitting the bench….I want to develop these kids at the pace and the right time and bring em in when they’re ready. It’s a long season. Players get hurt and if a players gotta go to the minors, even for a month because we’ve got 7 defensemen, too damn bad.

Thought your blog dealt with the entire matter in a really insightful manner. People want to believe it is about condition or emotional intensity. It is about speed. LeCavalier in his prime was a magnificent skater. Even losing half a step changes your game dramatically. Mostly it affects your defensive play. Likely can stay strong in the offensive zone but are unable to get back in time to help in you end.

People forget that your center is your first call to back up to both defensemen in the triangle in front of the net and in the corners. Dmen get blamed all the time for goals that are scored from the slot where the center was able to get back to take his man.

- spatso

Lecavalier was never a magnificent skater. And his speed was just fine before the injury. And it is absolutely about condition. If he can recover fully from the back injury and stay healthy, he can still be an effective player.

And it is not true that the center in the first play back to back up both defenseman and around the net. The first forward back will assume down low support in a lot of systems, and it's not always the Center.

CapGeeek.com has those 3 players at 4.55 million not 3.51. Which number is correct?

To put Pronger on LTIR after the season officially starts, the Flyers would have to get under the $69M cap. One possible way to do this is to trade Grossmann for a pick. If they could do that they would have almost the entirety of Pronger's $4.94M cap hit in usable space. They could use that to recall players from the minors, and sign UFAs.

Last season they used the space to recall Adam Hall, and to sign Hall Gill.

We should consider trading a center/right winger for an equal return at the left wing and picks: someone like Read and Grossmann for a 3d or 4th round pick and someone in the ilk of Hagelin, Foligno, or Michalek.

So, cause I have some time on my hands, here is my Top Ten Flyer's playmakers of all time.

1. Bobby Clarke
Cmon, back to back years of 89 assists?? Clarke was an amazing passer who made every guy he skated with that much better. Seriously, you think Reggie Leach is scoring 60 goals in Oakland or Bill Flett is potting 43 playing with anyone else?

2. Peter Forsberg
He was only here for a very short time, but man this guy could pass the puck! Foppa was an awesome combo of soft hands and fantastic hockey sense.

3. Claude Giroux
Another guy that knows how to thread the needle, he is especially lethal on the pp.

4. Mark Recchi
Not only was he a great playmaker, but he knew when to pass and when to shoot which is a skill that really can't be taught.

5. Eric Lindros
People remember the goals and hits, but the Big E was a fantastic playmaker as well.

6. Mark Howe
His hockey sense was off the charts and he was one of the most accurate passers I have ever had the pleasure to watch.

7. Bill Barber
One of the best all around forwards of his generation, Barber was an excellent passer.

8. Chris Pronger
Another guy who knew when to fire the puck or when to dish it off. He set up plays from the point as well as anyone who ever wore a Flyers jersey.

9. Ken Linseman
In his one full healthy season playing with "The Rat", Paul Holmgren scored 30 goals. Linseman had great hockey sense and soft hands and probably would have had some 100 point seasons if he didn't spend so much time in the box.

10. Jaromir Jagr
Wasn't here long and was far past his prime, but Jags was still a fantastic passer and almost impossible to separate from the puck along the wall.

Just missed the cut:
Andre Lacroix
Rick Macleish
Rod Brind'amour
Jake Voracek

You may now return to arguing about VL, the cap and Corsi numbers.

Yes and no. What his skating was before the injury, and what it was after the injury were two different things.

I heard Vinny got skating tips after his injury from Hartnell. I think that's why Hartnell was really traded.

Bill,

What is up with Kabanov getting waived? Guy seemed to have skill but didn't get a real chance at AHL or NHL level.

And now, 2 poll questions for the day

1. Most beloved player who never played for the Flyers. Can be from any era.
and
2. Most hated player who never played for the Flyers. Can also be from any era.

My choices are:
1. Gordie Howe
2. Tomas Sandstrom

I'm not sure I can be friends with someone who said bad things about Gordie Howe. That's a good choice. And I love that he comes to the WFC for games when he's in town.

I hate Darcy Tucker with every fiber of my being. Only slightly more than I hated Matthew Barnaby. The only difference between the two is that Tucker could actually play a little (and therefore, more reprehensible).

Fine choices! Picking just one piece of poop to hate wasn't easy. Dale Hunter was also in the running.

You really should not make stuff up and pretend to understand something you do not. Read any basic coaches guideline on the role of center and you will see that the first responsibility on D is to break up any pass through the triangle and back up each D man when he goes into the corner. If you have no references on the positioning and role of center I can help you.
